Cleveland Clinic CEO Addresses Senate Committee
Toby Cosgrove, MD, CEO of the Cleveland Clinic, addressed the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee on healthcare reform, according to a report in the Cleveland Plain Dealer. The hearing included 24 participants who represented business, the insurance industry, hospitals, academia, medical groups, organized labor and state government, according to the report.Dr. Cosgrove noted that the Cleveland Clinic, which operates as a group practice, reduces cost because the system aligns the financial interests of the hospital and its physicians. According to the report, he said that there is no financial motive for physicians at the Clinic to order expensive or unnecessary tests for their patients.
The committee, chaired by Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), is one of many in Congress working to form healthcare reform legislation.
