CMS: 3M Enrolled in Medicaid, CHIP Through March 1
Between Oct. 1 and Feb. 28, approximately 3 million people enrolled in Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program, according to a CMS report.
That's a 5.2 percent increase over the average monthly enrollment for July through September 2013, according to the report. Based on enrollment data reported by 45 states and the District of Columbia, about 61 million people total were enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP in February.
Additionally, in the 22 states that had expanded Medicaid by February, Medicaid and CHIP enrollment rose by 8.3 percent compared to the July through September baseline period, compared with a 1.6 percent increase during the same interval for states that hadn't expanded Medicaid. Currently, 26 states and D.C. have expanded Medicaid under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.
CMS has noted that the February 2014 enrollment numbers understate total enrollment because not all states have reported data, the data are preliminary and the data don't include most people who will be found eligible for Medicaid or CHIP through retroactive coverage.
