110 Hospital and Health System CFOs to Know

Becker's Hospital Review has named the following CFOs to its list, "110 Hospital and Health System CFOs to Know." These men and women help lead renowned healthcare institutions in all financial matters while balancing quality patient care. The Becker's Hospital Review editorial team used several resources to develop this list, including nominations, prior Becker's Hospital Review lists and input from industry experts. Note: Individuals cannot pay for inclusion on the list. Names are presented in alphabetical order.

Clint Adams, Ardent Health Services (Nashville, Tenn.). Mr. Adams has been with Ardent since 2003, leading the financial operations of the system's seven acute-care hospitals and 220,000-member health plan. Prior to Ardent, he was an audit senior manager for Ernst & Young, where he managed large- and medium-sized audit engagements of multiple healthcare and technology companies.

Jenny Barnett-Sarpalius, Catholic Health East (Newtown Square, Pa.). Ms. Barnett-Sarpalius is responsible for the financial oversight and stewardship of Catholic Health East, one of the largest non-profit hospital systems in the country. Previously, she was CHE's vice president and chief accounting officer, and she was also the system director of finance and corporate controller at CHRISTUS Health in Irving, Texas.

Warren Beck, Vanderbilt University Medical Center (Nashville, Tenn.). Mr. Beck served as vice president of finance for clinical enterprise for 13 years before being promoted to senior vice president of finance, CFO and associate vice chancellor for health affairs in 2009. He is responsible for financial oversight of all operating divisions of VUMC. Before Vanderbilt, he provided healthcare consulting services as a manager with KPMG Peat Marwick in the New York City area.

Talana Bell, Flowers Hospital (Dothan, Ala.). Ms. Bell arrived at Flowers Hospital in 1998 working as an auditor, and since 2000, she has been the hospital's CFO. Community Health Systems, the parent company of Flowers, recognized Ms. Bell as CFO of the Year in 2009, as she has consistently brought strong returns over the past 10 years without compromising the hospital's patient care and quality.

Chris Bergman, The Christ Hospital (Cincinnati). Mr. Bergman, who officially became CFO of the 555-bed Christ Hospital in July 2009, has more than 29 years of financial operating experience in the healthcare industry. He was previously the CFO for the Sparrow Health System in Lansing, Mich., and vice president of finance at Centura Health in Englewood, Colo.

Michael Blaszyk, Catholic Healthcare West (San Francisco). Mr. Blaszyk currently oversees the financial affairs and corporate operations for the $11.8 billion integrated health system. He has more than 30 years of experience in managing finances and operations in the healthcare sector, and he previously served as the CFO for University Hospitals Healthcare System in Cleveland.

Sally Boemer, Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston). Ms. Boemer started at Massachusetts General, one of the top 15 highest grossing hospitals in the United States, in 1993 in an administrative fellowship, which was an educational program that allowed her to rotate through the hospital's entire operations and finance departments. She assumed the position of senior vice president for finance in 1999, and over the past five years, she has played a central role in the planning and development of the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care in Danvers, Mass.

Jeffrey Bolton, Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minn.). Mr. Bolton has been CFO at Mayo Clinic since 2003. After a slow start in the first quarter of 2009, Mr. Bolton and the clinic successfully worked with staff to help drive down costs. Previously, Mr. Bolton was CFO at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and worked in planning and financial analysis at the University of Pittsburgh.

Kevin Brennan, Geisinger Health System (Danville, Pa.). From 1997 through 2000, Mr. Brennan served as the CFO of the Penn State Geisinger Health System, and since then, he has held his role as CFO of the entire Geisinger Health System. Prior to joining Geisinger, he was the regional vice president of finance and vice president of managed care with Sylvania (Ohio) Franciscan Health, and he was also the vice president of finance for The Germantown Hospital and Medical Center in Philadelphia and Saint Michael's Medical Center in Newark, N.J.

William Brosius, St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital (Houston). Before Mr. Brosius became CFO of St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, he served as the chief financial consultant for hospital operations at The Lane Group, a boutique healthcare consulting firm in Atlanta. He was also a consultant and CFO for Triumph HealthCare, a $300 million long-term acute-care hospital company.

Tammy Broussard, West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital (Sulphur, La.). Ms. Broussard first began her career at West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital in 1996 as a controller, and by 2007, she became the hospital's CFO. She has led the hospital in its non-clinical IT systems implementation and also was a key player in obtaining more than $30 million in funding for the hospital's capital equipment, maintenance and operations.

Judy Brown, East Jefferson General Hospital (Metairie, La.). Ms. Brown joined EJGH in 2010 with more than 30 years of experience in the healthcare finance industry. She has helped implement financial strategies to ensure the community hospital's stability and also spearheads EJGH's outpatient services, care management, health IT and supply management.

Michael Buhl, University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics (Madison). Before joining UW Hospital and Clinics in 2008, Mr. Buhl served as the interim CFO at Stanford Hospital and Clinics in Palo Alto, Calif., where he directed its operating budget of $1.4 billion and capital budget of $400 million. He was also CFO for the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Ariz., and Mayo Franciscan Skemp Healthcare in La Crosse, Wis.

Michael Burke, NYU Langone Medical Center (New York). Since joining NYU Langone Medical Center in 2008, Mr. Burke has initiated a finance transformation process that involved a complete assessment and overhaul of the hospital's existing business processes and systems. Previously, he served as CFO of Tufts Medical Center in Boston and CFO of Duke University Hospital in Durham, N.C. Mr. Burke has spent more than 20 years in healthcare financial management.

Mike Butler, Providence Health & Services (Renton, Wash.). Mr. Butler joined Providence Health System in 1998 as CFO. He added the position of executive vice president in 2002. Mr. Butler is responsible for the financial services and operational oversight of an organization with $7.6 billion in annual net revenue.

Lisa Carlson, Sanford Health (Fargo, N.D.). Ms. Carlson has been Sanford Health's CFO since 2003. She began her career with the system in 1987 as the controller for the Fargo Clinic. She has served in numerous other financial roles prior to becoming CFO and is a member of the North Dakota Healthcare Association and the North Dakota Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Larry Cash, Community Health Systems (Franklin, Tenn.). CHS first brought Mr. Cash aboard in 1997. Previously, he held senior-level financial positions at Columbia/HCA Healthcare, Humana and PricewaterhouseCoopers. From 2005 to 2011, Mr. Cash was named one of America's best CFOs in healthcare by Institutional Investor. In 2008, he was also named BusinessTN's first ever CFO of the Year.

Paul Castillo, University of Michigan Health System (Ann Arbor, Mich.). Mr. Castillo was named CFO for U-M Health System in September. Previously, he was CFO and vice president of finance at UPMC Shadyside in Pittsburgh, a 520-bed hospital within the UPMC system. He worked his way up the ranks at UPMC since 1996, ultimately managing its $1.9 billion operating budget. Mr. Castillo was also the vice president of finance at Saint Vincent Health System in Erie, Pa., in the early 1990s.

Randy Combs, Mercy (Chesterfield, Mo.). Mr. Combs has been with Mercy for more than 25 years and assumed his role as CFO in March 2009. He has also been executive vice president, CFO and COO for Mercy's operations in St. Louis and Washington, Mo. Before joining Mercy, Mr. Combs was the vice president of finance for Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

James Connelly, Henry Ford Health System (Detroit). Before he joined Henry Ford Health System, Mr. Connelly was CFO of TriHealth in Cincinnati and the senior vice president and COO of Bethesda North Hospital, also in Cincinnati. Crain's Detroit Business recently named Mr. Connelly as one of the top CFOs in southeast Michigan.

Diane Corrigan, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia). For the past 11 years, Ms. Corrigan has been CFO of the largest hospital in Philadelphia that had revenues of almost $6 billion in 2010. She has helped the hospital reach an operating margin that has consistently been above 10 percent for the past four years while also improving HUP's bond ratings and controlling costs. Philadelphia Business Journal also named Ms. Corrigan as CFO of the Year for 2011.

Thomas Corrigan, Christiana Care Health System (Wilmington, Del.). Mr. Corrigan has been the senior vice president and CFO of Christiana Care since Oct. 2006. Before joining the health system, he was CFO for the ADP Brokerage Services Group in Jersey City, N.J., and was also president of the ADP Investment Center in Wilmington, Del.

David Cox, Marin General Hospital (Greenbrae, Calif.). Mr. Cox was a consultant to the Marin Healthcare District before joining as full-time CFO in 2009. Previously, he held various finance and management positions at Sutter Health in Sacramento, Calif., Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt., and St. Mary's Health System in Waterbury, Conn. Mr. Cox was also the recipient of North Bay Business Journal's 2011 CFO Recognition Award.

Kelly Curry, Health Management Associates (Naples, Fla.). Since Jan. 2010, Mr. Curry has led HMA in its financial operations and endeavors. He has been involved in hospital and health management for roughly 30 years and has served as HMA's chief administrative officer and COO prior to his current appointment.

Dennis Dahlen, Banner Health (Phoenix, Ariz.). Mr. Dahlen has been part of Banner Health for several years, starting as an internal auditor in 1983. He was named vice president of finance in 2000 and senior vice president of finance in 2006 before becoming CFO in 2009. He oversees all financial operations of Banner Health, which operates 23 non-profit hospitals in seven states.

Stephen Danch, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Hamot (Erie, Pa.). Mr. Danch has been UPMC Hamot's CFO since 1989, helping to develop, interpret, coordinate and administer policies on the hospital's finances for more than 20 years. Prior to joining UPMC Hamot in 1980, he served in the audit department of accounting firm Root, Spitnas and Smiley in Erie, Pa.

Robert DeMichiei, University of Pittsburgh (Pa.) Medical Center. As senior vice president and CFO, Mr. DeMichiei leads the financial initiatives of one of the top grossing systems in the country. In February of 2010, Moody's praised UPMC management for its "pro-active initiatives to improve operational efficiencies, including management's ability to balance capacity with community need to meet clinical demands while justifying clinical expenditures." Previously, Mr. DeMichiei held various executive finance roles at General Electric and worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers in Pittsburgh for 10 years.

Chris Denton, Henrico Doctors' Hospital (Richmond, Va.). In addition to his role as CFO at Henrico Doctors' Hospital, Mr. Denton is CFO for HCA Virginia Health System, also based in Richmond. The central Virginia organization is the largest healthcare provider in the area, operating six hospital campuses along with freestanding surgery, imaging and family health centers.

Anthony Dorsch, Providence Health and Services Alaska (Anchorage, Alaska). Mr. Dorsch served as assistant CFO since June 2007 and now is in charge of the regional finance. Previously, Mr. Dorsch worked in the main office of Providence in various positions, including system director of financial planning and system manager of strategic finance.

Stephanie Doughty, Poudre Valley Health System (Fort Collins, Colo.). Prior to joining PVHS in 1998, Ms. Doughty was CFO of St. Anthony's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla. She also worked with Bayfront Medical Center, also in St. Petersburg, for 10 years as the controller and vice president of finance and with Englewood (Fla.) Community Hospital as the controller.

John Doyle, IASIS Healthcare (Franklin, Tenn.). Before becoming CFO, Mr. Doyle served as IASIS' vice president and treasurer and chief accounting officer and has been with the organization for more than nine years. He has also worked in various financial roles at community hospitals throughout Tennessee and North Carolina and in healthcare audit and business advisory service capacities with Ernst & Young and KPMG.

Marvin Eichorn, Mountain States Health Alliance (Johnson City, Tenn.). Since 1998, Mr. Eichorn has been part of the Mountain States Health Alliance, a regional healthcare system with 13 total hospitals throughout Tennessee, Virginia, Kentucky and North Carolina. He was previously with Covenant Health, based in Knoxville, Tenn.

John Faulstich, UAB Health System (Birmingham, Ala.). Before joining UAB Health System in April 2009, Mr. Faulstich was the senior vice president of finance and CFO for Cleveland-based Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine Health System. As CFO of UAB, Faulstich oversees financial functions of a $3 billion system that includes 2,300 licensed beds in six hospitals, including the largest hospital in Alabama and third-largest public hospital in the U.S.; nearly 16,000 employees, including a 1,100 nonprofit faculty group physician practice; a 90,000 member HMO; and the only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in a six-state region.

Joseph Felkner, Lehigh Valley Health Network (Allentown, Pa.). Before joining Lehigh Valley Hospital in Aug. 2009 as CFO, Mr. Felkner was senior vice president and chief strategy officer at Baptist Health Care in Pensacola, Fla. Before that, he was senior vice president of finance at OhioHealth in Columbus and CFO of Grant Medical Center and Riverside Methodist Hospital, both located in Columbus and members of OhioHealth.

Mr. Felkner has since left LVHN, as of Sept. 8, 2011.

Steve Filton, Universal Health Services (King of Prussia, Pa.). Since 2003, Mr. Filton has been CFO of UHS, which recorded roughly $5.57 billion in 2010 revenues. He has been with UHS, the seventh-largest for-profit hospital operator in the United States, for more than 20 years and served in various capacities, including director of accounting and control, controller, vice president, principal accounting officer and secretary.

Kenneth Fisher, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (Iowa City). Mr. Fisher has been CFO of UIHC since June 2007. Previously, he was interim CFO of Navigant Consulting. Mr. Fisher has more than 30 years of experience in the hospital financial management sector and has held financial positions at various hospitals through Michigan, Tennessee and North Carolina.

Michael Freed, Spectrum Health (Grand Rapids, Mich.). Mr. Freed has 25 years of healthcare management experience. He has led efforts in consumer transparency at Spectrum Health, which was among the first in the country to post average prices for many common procedures online. Mr. Freed has also helped Spectrum Health maintain its Aa3 financial rating since 1998, a designation held by only 38 health systems in the country.

John Gantner, Meridian Health (Neptune, N.J.). Mr. Gantner has been CFO of Meridian Health, one of the largest non-profit health systems in New Jersey, since Feb. 2008. Previously, he served as executive vice president of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and Health System in New Brunswick, N.J., and also as a healthcare consulting partner at Ernst & Young.

Stephen Gary, Akron (Ohio) General Health System. Mr. Gary began his role as CFO of Akron General Health System on Jan. 31, 2011. He previously served as senior vice president and CFO of St. Vincent Health System in Erie, Pa., since 2005. Mr. Gary has also worked at the University of Rochester (N.Y.) Medical Center and Rochester General Health System for 10 years.

John Geppi, Covenant Health System (Knoxville, Tenn.). Mr. Geppi has been involved in the hospital and healthcare industry for roughly 36 years. Before joining Covenant Health, he was a senior manager with Arthur Andersen for 11 years.

Steven Glass, Cleveland Clinic Health System. Mr. Glass has been CFO of Cleveland Clinic since 2005. He is also CFO of Cleveland Clinic Health System, overseeing financial operations at the Cleveland Clinic East and West Region hospitals, Marymount Hospital, Cleveland Clinic Florida and other subsidiaries. In 2010, the Cleveland Clinic was the second-highest grossing hospital in the country, bringing in total revenues of $9.14 billion.

Mike Gleason, Shands Jacksonville (Fla.) Medical Center. Mr. Gleason was the controller at the 607-bed Shands Jacksonville before becoming CFO in 2009. Last year, the hospital managed total patient revenues of more than $1.8 billion.

Robert Glenning, Hackensack (N.J.) University Medical Center. Mr. Glenning has been CFO at HUMC for the past four years, handling gross revenues near $1.25 billion. Previously, he was CFO of Kaleida Health in Buffalo, N.Y., which lost a record $62.5 million before he started in 2001 and reported a $50 million surplus in 2006 under his tenure.

Paul Goldstein, Orlando Health. Mr. Goldstein oversees the financial matters of the $1.5 billion non-profit Orlando Health, which is comprised of nine hospitals. The health system saw its net profit increase by 13 percent, from $73.3 million in 2009 to $83 million in 2010.

Greg Gombar, Carolinas HealthCare System (Charlotte, N.C.). Mr. Gombar first joined Carolinas in 1984. Before then, he served as an audit manager and healthcare consultant with Arthur Andersen for seven years. Currently, he is actively involved with the North Carolina Hospital Association and is a member of the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants.

Michael Gough, Norton Healthcare (Louisville, Ky.). Mr. Gough's career in healthcare finance stretches back to 1983, when he first worked for Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corporation. He served various roles, including CFO of Audubon Regional Medical in Louisville, Ky., and CFO of Medical Center Hospital in Huntsville, Ala., before joining Caritas Health Services as CFO in 1994. Mr. Gough joined Norton Healthcare in 2000 as the vice president of finance and has been CFO for the past eight years.

Richard Grossi, Johns Hopkins Medicine (Baltimore). Mr. Grossi, who has been CFO of Johns Hopkins Medicine since 1996, oversees day-to-day financial functions of the school of medicine, Johns Hopkins' four acute-care hospitals, its medical groups, home care, long-term care, managed care organizations and international initiatives. Before joining Johns Hopkins in 1978, he was the assistant director of financial analysis and financial director of the medical group at the University of Connecticut and executive director of the medical group at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.

Misty Darling Hansen, University Medical Center (Tucson, Ariz.). Ms. Hansen had been University Medical Center's chief accounting officer before being named CFO in Jan. 2010. After joining the medical center in 2001, she worked on a variety of financial initiatives. She oversees an annual operating budget of $530 million.

Gail Hanson, Aurora Health Care (Milwaukee). Ms. Hanson was appointed as senior vice president and CFO of Aurora in Jan. 2011. Previously, she served as the deputy executive director for the State of Wisconsin Investment Board and was also CFO for Cobalt Corporation, a health insurer now operating as Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Diane Harden, DeKalb Medical (Decatur, Ga.). Ms. Harden has been CFO of DeKalb Medical since 2005. With more than 30 years of experience in healthcare finance, she has been a CFO at both for-profit and non-profit hospitals in the Southeast, most recently serving as CFO of the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.

Fred Hargett, Novant Health (Winston-Salem, N.C.). Since 2003, Mr. Hargett has worked his way up Novant's leadership ladder, going from senior vice president of financial planning to executive vice president of finance to CFO. Prior to joining Novant, he worked as a manager of healthcare consulting with Ernst & Young in Charlotte, N.C., leading several initiatives in strategic planning and financial forecasting.

Mark Hepler, Munson Healthcare (Traverse City, Mich.). Before being named Munson Healthcare's CFO in 2010, Mr. Hepler was the interim CFO and vice president of finance, and he has been with the system for 27 years. He has helped the organization maintain its A1 bond rating from Moody's since leading its financial department.

Paul Ishizuka, University of Washington Medical Center (Seattle). Mr. Ishizuka has been the associate executive director and CFO for UW Medical Center since 1999. He has also served as CFO and controller throughout other hospitals in Washington and California, and he serves on the finance committees of various UW Medicine affiliates.

Milton Johnson, Hospital Corporation of America (Nashville, Tenn.). Mr. Johnson was named executive vice president and CFO of HCA in 2004. He joined HCA in 1982 as a tax manager in the research and planning area. Mr. Johnson currently serves on the board of directors for Nashville's Siloam Family Health Center, the HCA Foundation and the Sarah Cannon Research Institute.





Jack Kaup, Black Hills Surgical Hospital (Rapid City, S.D.). Mr. Kaup has been CFO of Black Hills Surgical Hospital since 1999, three years after it first opened. He has more than 20 years of experience in finance, accounting and business operations. Prior to joining Black Hills, Mr. Kaup was involved in financial management of a diverse group of industries and served as a certified public accountant at a national firm.

Greg Klugherz, CentraCare Health System (St. Cloud, Minn.). Mr. Klugherz joined CentraCare in 2008 as its CFO. Previously, he was a vice president for HealthPartners in Minneapolis and CFO for Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minn. Additionally, Mr. Klugherz was the senior financial executive for the 700-provider HealthPartners Medical Group.

Kathy Lancaster, Kaiser Foundation Hospitals (Oakland, Calif.). Ms. Lancaster has been with Kaiser Foundation Hospitals since 1998 and has been CFO since 2005. She oversees numerous aspects, including Kaiser Permanente HealthConnect, which is Kaiser Permanente's integrated medical records system. She also provides financial leadership for each of Kaiser Permanente's eight geographic regions.

Phyllis Lantos, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (New York City). Ms. Lantos joined the system in 2000 as senior vice president and CFO and was named executive vice president in 2007. She previously served as deputy COO at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn., and as vice president of financial management services at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City.

Todd LaPorte, Scottsdale (Ariz.) Healthcare. Mr. LaPorte has been with Scottsdale Healthcare since 2001, when he joined the organization as the director of finance. He was promoted to vice president of finance and CFO in 2006. Previously, Mr. LaPorte was CFO of a dental health group for nine years, and he began his career in healthcare finance with Ernst & Young.

Dennis Laraway, Memorial Hermann Healthcare System (Houston). Prior to his position at Memorial Hermann, Mr. Laraway had been CFO of Scott & White Healthcare, based in Temple, Texas, for several years. Mr. Laraway helped shepherd the sale of $348 million in bonds to be used to finance strategic capital projects and refinance outstanding debt.

Mike Louge, OhioHealth (Columbus). Mr. Louge has been CFO of OhioHealth since 2000, responsible for the health system's finances, treasury, managed care, internal audit, information systems, materials management and real estate/construction. Prior to joining the six-hospital OhioHealth, Mr. Louge was CFO at Seton Healthcare in Austin, Texas, and vice president of financial operations at Presbyterian Healthcare System in Dallas.

Tom Luebbering, Northeast Regional Medical Center (Kirksville, Mo.). Mr. Luebbering has been CFO of NRMC, an HCA-affiliated hospital, since Oct. 2009. He has roughly 20 years of experience in the healthcare industry and most recently served as CFO for SSM St. Mary's Health Center in St. Louis.

Robert Lux, Temple University Health System (Philadelphia). Mr. Lux has been CFO of Temple University Health since 1996, and he has held a variety of other positions at Temple University Hospital since 1981. Prior to his work at TUHS, he worked for KPMG Peat Marwick. In 2008, the Philadelphia Business Journal named Mr. Lux CFO of the Year for large non-profit organizations.

Richard Magenheimer, Inova Health System (Falls Church, Va.). Mr. Magenheimer joined Inova Health in 1987 as vice president of financial operations and was named CFO in 1992. Prior to joining Inova, he worked for American Medical International, an investor-owned international hospital management company, where he served as vice president of financial controls and director of finance for West Coast operations.  

Timothy Maurice, University of California Davis Health System (Sacramento, Calif.). As CFO, Mr. Maurice is responsible for the overall financial operations of UC Davis Health System and its $1.6 billion annual budget. He joined UC Davis in 2011, after serving as vice president and CFO at St. John's Regional Medical Center and St. John's Pleasant Valley Hospital, members of Catholic Healthcare West. He has previously served as CFO for a number of hospitals, including Good Samaritan Community Healthcare in Puyallup, Wash., and Saint Joseph Mercy-Oakland in Pontiac, Mich.

Peter McCanna, Northwestern Memorial HealthCare (Evanston, Ill.). Mr. McCanna is executive vice president of administration and CFO of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare and its principal subsidiary, Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Mr. McCanna joined Northwestern Memorial in Aug. 2002 as senior vice president, CFO and treasurer. Previously, he was senior vice president and CFO at Presbyterian Healthcare Services in Albuquerque, N.M. Prior to that, he was the senior vice president and CFO of the University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora.

Patrick McGuire, St. John Providence Health System (Warren, Mich.). Mr. McGuire has held the CFO position at St. John Providence Health System since 2004. He is responsible for the financial leadership of the $2 billion health system, which is the largest single component of Ascension Health. He has provided leadership for an innovative revenue cycle partnership in Michigan, which is a pilot for Ascension Health nationally.

Derek Miller, Southeast Alabama Medical Center (Dothan, Ala.). Mr. Miller serves as CFO and senior vice president of SAMC. He also holds the CFO position and is a member of the board of directors for the proposed Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine scheduled to break ground in early 2012 — the first in Alabama. He previously was CFO of Bay Medical Center in Panama City, Fla., and Lake Charles (La.) Memorial Hospital.

Wentz Miller, INTEGRIS Health (Oklahoma City). Prior to joining INTEGRIS in Oct. 1998, Mr. Miller worked for Hospital Corporation of America in several capacities, including market and division CFO in Nashville. He also served as CFO for Tulane University Hospital and Clinic in New Orleans.

John Mordach, Rush University Medical Center (Chicago). Mr. Mordach was named CFO and senior vice president of RUMC in Feb. 2011. Before assuming his role with Rush, Mr. Mordach was CFO and treasurer for Loyola University Health System in Maywood, Ill. Prior to his time at Loyola, Mr. Mordach was senior vice president and CFO at Edward Health Services in Naperville, Ill. He was also vice president of finance at University of Chicago Hospitals and Health System.

Daniel Morissette, Stanford (Calif.) Hospital & Clinics. Mr. Morissette has been CFO at Stanford Hospital & Clinics since 2007. Before then, he was senior vice president of finance and strategy at University of Toledo (Ohio) Medical Center and University of Toledo.

Kenneth Morris, Duke University Health System (Durham, N.C.). Mr. Morris serves as senior vice president, CFO and treasurer of Duke University Health System. Previously, he has served as assistant vice president for finance at Loyola University in Chicago and vice president for finance and treasurer at Loyola University Health System, based in Maywood, Ill. Immediately prior to coming to Duke, Mr. Morris served as senior vice president of finance for Mission St. Joseph's Health System in Asheville, N.C.

Michael Mueller, Health Central (Ocoee, Fla.). Mr. Mueller became CFO for Health Central in 2007. He has been instrumental in the pending merger between his 171-bed hospital and Orlando Health, which has eight local hospitals and 1,882 total beds.

Dominic Nakis, Advocate Health Care (Oak Brook, Ill.). Mr. Nakis joined EHS Health Care in 1995, where he served as vice president of finance and corporate controller since 1995. EHS Health Care later merged with Lutheran General Health Systems to form Advocate. Before the merger, Mr. Nakis served as EHS Health Care's vice president of finance and corporate controller. He began his career at Ernst & Young.

Joel Perlman, Montefiore Medical Center (Bronx, N.Y.). Mr. Perlman provides financial planning and management leadership for Montefiore's four hospitals, 22 outpatient centers and a large home care network — a system with nearly $3 billion in revenue. Prior to his more than 20 years at Montefiore, he was CFO of St. Francis Medical Center in Trenton, N.J.

John Peters, St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center (Phoenix). As CFO of the top-grossing hospital in Arizona, Mr. Peters has more than 23 years of experience in hospital financial management. Previously, he was CFO for Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada's largest hospital, as well as CFO for Saint Joseph East, previously known as Humana Hospital Lexington (Ky.).  

Biggs Porter, Tenet Healthcare (Dallas). Mr. Porter joined Tenet in June 2006 from Raytheon, where he served as vice president and corporate controller. Before Raytheon, Mr. Porter was senior vice president and corporate controller of TXU, a large public utility based in Dallas. He previously held positions as CFO of Northrop Grumman Corp.'s integrated systems sector; vice president, controller and assistant treasurer of Vought Aircraft Company; and corporate manager of external financial reporting for LTV Corporation.

Scott Posecai, Ochsner Health System (New Orleans). Mr. Posecai is the executive vice president and CFO for the Ochsner Health System. Mr. Posecai joined Ochsner Clinic in 1987 and was named CFO in 1995, continuing in that role until the merger of the Ochsner Clinic and the Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation in 2001. Upon merger, he was named CFO of the Ochsner Clinic Foundation, and in 2006, of the Ochsner Health System. Prior to joining Ochsner, he held positions in accounting, treasury and international tax in the oil and gas industry.

Edward Prunchunas, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (Los Angeles). Mr. Prunchunas has served as senior vice president of finance and CFO at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center since 1998. Mr. Prunchunas has previous service as CFO at Northridge (Calif.) Hospital Medical Center and as a member of the consulting staff of the accounting firm Ernst & Young.

Ann Pumpian, Sharp HealthCare (San Diego). Ms. Pumpian first joined Sharp HealthCare in 1984 and has held her role as CFO since 1993. She has received several awards within the industry, including the Sharp HealthCare Leadership Award and the Young Women's Christian Association Tribute to Women in Industry Award.

Michael Reney, Brigham and Women's Hospital (Boston). Mr. Reney began his career at Brigham and Women's Hospital as an accounting supervisor in 1990. With the formation of Partners HealthCare and the centralization of financial services for member hospitals, Mr. Reney rose through the ranks as a senior manager and director over a 10-year stretch before coming back to Brigham and Women's as executive director/controller for the hospital's finance in 2000.

Jay Rising, JD, Detroit Medical Center. Mr. Rising was named executive vice president and CFO for DMC in Feb. 2006. Since 2003, he served as Michigan's state treasurer and was previously with the law firm Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone, PLC. His more than 20 years of experience includes providing strategic counsel to the city of Detroit, Wayne County and the state of Michigan.

Chuck Robb, Saint Luke's Health System (Kansas City, Mo.). Mr. Robb became CFO of Saint Luke's Health System in 1999 after serving in other finance positions, including CFO of Saint Luke's Hospital, since joining the organization in 1991. He is a certified public accountant.

Kevin Roberts, BJC Healthcare (St. Louis). In 2008, Mr. Roberts came to 13-hospital BJC from University Hospitals Health System in Cleveland, where he was senior vice president and CFO. During his tenure at University Hospitals, the system accomplished a multi-year financial turnaround that improved profitability by $250 million. Prior to joining University Hospitals in 2001, Roberts served for nine years as treasurer of The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, an 11-hospital system.

Phillip Roe, Vanguard Health Systems (Nashville, Tenn.). Mr. Roe began serving as executive vice president, CFO and treasurer for Vanguard in Nov. 2007. He previously served as Vanguard's controller and chief accounting officer since the company's founding in July 1997. Prior to joining Vanguard, Mr. Roe served as senior vice president, controller and chief accounting officer of OrNda HealthCorp, which would eventually merge with Tenet Healthcare Corporation. Prior to joining OrNda, Mr. Roe was associated with Ernst & Young for 10 years.

Richard Rothberger, Scripps Health (San Diego). Mr. Rothberger currently serves as corporate executive vice president and CFO of Scripps Health. He has held this position since Aug. 2001 and has 30-plus years of experience in the healthcare industry. Since joining Scripps in 2001, he has orchestrated a $150 million financial turnaround from operations. Prior to joining Scripps, Mr. Rothberger served as senior vice president and CFO for Mercy Healthcare Sacramento, a division of Catholic Healthcare West, from 1997 to 2001.

Michael Rutherford, Ohio State University Medical Center (Columbus, Ohio). Mr. Rutherford was named CFO at OSU Medical Center in Dec. 2010. He also serves as senior associate vice president of health sciences. Before this appointment, he served as system vice president and CFO at Summa Health System in Akron, Ohio. He has also worked in financial and executive leadership positions with Sisters of Charity, a Catholic health system based in Cincinnati.

Randy Safady, CHRISTUS Health (Irving, Texas). Mr. Safady joined CHRISTUS in June 2011 with more than 30 years of experience in finance, accounting and healthcare operations. Prior to his current position, he served as executive vice president and CFO of Centura Health, Colorado's largest health system. He also previously served as senior vice president and CFO of Adventist Midwest Health, a region of the Adventist Health system.

Robert Shapiro, North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System (Great Neck, N.Y.). Since Aug. 2000, Mr. Shapiro has been the senior vice president and CFO of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, and he also serves as the administrative contact for several committees of the board of trustees. Previously, he was the vice president of financial operations and director of finance/assistant administrator for the system, previously known as North Shore Health System, in 1984. He was also the assistant director of finance at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Jeffery Sherman, LifePoint Hospitals (Brentwood, Tenn.). Mr. Sherman brought more than 20 years of experience in hospital-based and corporate healthcare finance to LifePoint when he joined in 2009. Prior to his current position, Mr. Sherman served as vice president and treasurer of Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare. He has worked in various capacities for Tenet and its predecessor company since 1990.

Eddie Soler, Florida Hospital (Orlando). Mr. Soler is the executive vice president and CFO for Florida Hospital. With more than 2,100 beds, the seven-hospital system admits more patients annually than any other hospital in the country. Formerly, Mr. Soler served Florida Hospital as the CIO. He also served as senior vice president and CFO for the Adventist Health System, Midwest Region.

Jim Spear, Central DuPage Hospital (Winfield, Ill.). Mr. Spear has served as executive vice president and CFO since Jan. 2006. Before his appointment, Mr. Spear served on the board of directors of Central DuPage Health and its predecessor companies for more than 17 years. Prior to joining Central DuPage Health, Mr. Spear had his own business advising boards of directors on financial and governance matters. He began his career with PricewaterhouseCoopers and has served as vice president of finance at Keebler Foods.

Anthony Speranzo, Ascension Health (St. Louis). Mr. Speranzo is the senior vice president and CFO at Ascension Health. Prior to joining Ascension Health in 2002, Mr. Speranzo served as managing director at U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray. While there, he was responsible for strategic financial advisory services related to mergers, acquisitions, private debt placements, valuations and strategic market planning. His clients included hospitals, integrated health systems, medical group practices and managed care organizations nationwide. He also spent 11 years at the St. Joseph Health System in Orange, Calif., in different leadership positions.

Bernadette Spong, Rex Healthcare (Raleigh, N.C.). Ms. Spong has more than 20 years of experience in project management and finance in the healthcare industry. She returned to Rex in 2005 as CFO, having previously served as the organization's controller from 1988 through 1992. As CFO, she directs the financial operations of the organization including the revenue cycle and supply chain.

James Staten, Yale-New Haven (Conn.) Hospital. Prior to joining the system in 2000, Mr. Staten was a senior vice president in charge of finance for NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and the state's largest healthcare system, NewYork-Presbyterian Health Care System. Previously, he served as Ernst & Young's director of New York State Reimbursement Consulting Services and was a partner in the firm's healthcare management consulting and auditing practices.

Paul Staton, University of California, Los Angeles Hospital System. Mr. Staton, a certified public accountant, has worked at UCLA since 1996. He has served as CFO for the UCLA Hospital System since 2004 and previously served as the hospital system's controller. Mr. Staton has more than 28 years of experience in healthcare finance and has worked for various hospital organizations in Southern California.

Paul Storiale, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (New Brunswick, N.J.). Mr. Storiale was appointed CFO of RWJUH in March 2010 with extensive experience in several financial sectors, including healthcare. Previously, he was CFO of Saint Raphael Healthcare System in New Haven, Conn., and he also was vice president of finance of Gaylord Hospital in Wallingford, Conn.

Alan Strauss, Saint Thomas Health (Nashville, Tenn.). Mr. Strauss was named CFO of Saint Thomas Health in May 2006 and brings nearly 30 years of healthcare finance experience to the role. Fourteen years of Mr. Strauss' career were spent at Saint John's Hospital and Health Center in Santa Monica, Calif., where he served as CFO and operations leader and as the CEO of Vinserra, a for-profit affiliate.

Michael Szubski, University Hospitals (Cleveland). Mr. Szubski has worked at University Hospitals since 2003 and was named CFO in 2008. Previously, he held management positions at several other healthcare organizations throughout Ohio, including EMH Healthcare in Elyria and health insurer UnitedHealthcare of Ohio.

Jeff Taylor, St. Luke's Health System (Boise, Idaho). Mr. Taylor joined St. Luke's in 1994 as the director of finance before being promoted to CFO. He has led the transformation from a single hospital to a multi-faceted operation with annual operating revenues of more than $1 billion. Before St. Luke's, Mr. Taylor worked as a senior manager at Deloitte and Touche as well as Ernst & Young.

Mike Tretina, Mary Greeley Medical Center (Ames, Iowa). Mr. Tretina has been with Mary Greeley Medical Center since 2009. He has more than 23 years of healthcare finance experience, including 12 years at St. Vincent's Health System in Jacksonville, Fla., where he served as senior vice president of finance. Before then, Mr. Tretina served as vice president of finance and reimbursement director at the same facility.

Kevin Vermeer, Iowa Health System (Des Moines, Iowa). Mr. Vermeer was named executive vice president and CFO in 2009. Before then, he served as CFO for Trinity Regional Health System in Rock Island, Ill., and interim CEO of Unity HealthCare in Muscatine, Iowa. He has also held positions with Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, and Sisters of Charity hospitals in Colorado.

Nick Vitale, Beaumont Health System (Royal Oak, Mich.). Mr. Vitale was named executive vice president and CFO in June 2011. Before assuming his current position, he served as Beaumont's senior vice president of financial operations since 2007. Prior to this, he served as vice president and chief financial executive of Beaumont Hospital, Troy. He has also held senior financial positions at Detroit Medical Center.

Denise Warren, Capella Healthcare (Brentwood, Tenn.). As senior vice president and CFO, Ms. Warren has more than 25 years of diverse financial experience. Before joining Capella, she was senior equity analyst and research director for Avondale Partners LLC.  Her department provided analytical research on publicly-traded companies, focusing on healthcare, consumer products, restaurants, retail and technology. Ms. Warren began her career in 1980 with Ernst & Young in Raleigh, N.C.

David Watson, National Surgical Hospitals (Chicago). Mr. Watson recently became CFO of National Surgical Hospitals in August after serving as senior vice president and CFO of Community Education Centers, a provider of reentry treatment and education services for adult correctional populations based in West Caldwell, N.J. He also was executive vice president and CFO of Radiation Therapy Services, a developer and operator of radiation therapy centers and ancillary medical practices.

Gary Weiss, NorthShore University HealthSystem (Evanston, Ill.). Mr. Weiss is executive vice president, CFO and treasurer of NorthShore University HealthSystem, which consists of four hospitals. He spent more than 25 years in banking and financial services before coming to NorthShore in 2001.

Marvin White, St. Vincent Health (Indianapolis). Mr. White has overseen the finances, materials management, accounting and other services as CFO of St. Vincent Health since 2008. Previously, he was the executive director and CFO at Eli Lilly & Company's Lilly USA and held other leadership positions at Lilly in corporate finance and investment banking.

Jeanné Wickens, Allegiance Health (Jackson, Mich.). Since 2004, Ms. Wickens has been CFO of Allegiance Health, which is comprised of more than 40 different facilities across six counties. She has several professional affiliations and serves on the finance committee and board of directors for United Way of Jackson County in Michigan.

Kris Zimmer, SSM Health Care (St. Louis). Mr. Zimmer has been with SSM Health Care since 2003. Previously, he served as CFO of Norton Healthcare in Louisville, Ky., CFO of Mount Carmel Health System in Columbus, Ohio, and CFO of Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center in Cambridge, Ohio. In June 2009, the St. Louis Business Journal named Mr. Zimmer its 2009 CFO of the Year for large non-profits.

Bert Zimmerli, Intermountain Healthcare (Salt Lake City). Mr. Zimmerli oversees the direction and oversight of all Intermountain Healthcare financial operations, including its insurance/health plans operation, SelectHealth. Prior to joining Intermountain Healthcare in 2003, Mr. Zimmerli was CFO of Methodist Hospital System in Houston and also served in numerous capacities with Houston-based Memorial Hermann Healthcare System. Before serving as a hospital executive, he was a partner at Ernst & Young's Houston office for 16 years specializing in healthcare finances.
