100 Hospitals With Great Orthopedic Programs – 2013

Becker's Hospital Review is pleased to name 100 Hospitals with Great Orthopedic Programs for 2013.

The hospitals included on this list have orthopedic surgery departments, programs or dedicated centers that have earned considerable recognition. Exceptional orthopedic departments often include physicians who provide outstanding patient care, advance cutting-edge orthopedic research and treat professional athletes.

Many of these hospitals have earned recognition for orthopedic excellence from U.S. News & World Report, Healthgrades, CareChex and Blue Cross Blue Shield. To devise this list, the Becker's editorial team weighted the aforementioned rankings and recognition, and conducted research to find the following hospitals as those with great orthopedic programs.

Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital (Downers Grove, Ill.). Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital's orthopedic program is tailored to provide a patient-centered experience with multidisciplinary care teams that include nurse navigators, case managers and physical and occupational therapists. Physicians on the hospital's orthopedic team perform more than 1,000 surgeries each year. Advocate Good Samaritan has received recognition from Blue Cross Blue Shield as a Blue Distinction Center for hip and knee replacements.

Allina Abbott Northwestern Hospital (Minneapolis). The physicians at Allina Abbott Northwestern's Orthopaedic Institute provide an integrated approach to orthopedic care and perform more than 4,000 orthopedic procedures each year. The institute also includes the 18-room Joint Replacement Center and the Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute for therapy. Allina Abbott Northwestern is one of Blue Cross Blue Shield's Blue Distinction Centers for spine surgery and hip and knee replacements and U.S. News & World Report ranked it as one of the top 50 hospitals for orthopedic care in 2013.
 
Baptist Hospital East (Louisville, Ky.). Surgeons at Baptist Hospital East perform more total joint replacement procedures than most other hospitals in Kentucky. The hospital earned Healthgrades' Joint Replacement Excellence Award for the past three years, including 2014, for its superior outcomes in knee and hip replacements. CareChex also ranked the hospital as one of the top providers for joint replacements in 2014.

Barnes-Jewish Hospital (St. Louis). Several professional sports teams in St. Louis visit Barnes-Jewish Hospital for orthopedic care, including the Rams football and Blues hockey teams. The hospital provides multidisciplinary teams of orthopedic specialists to treat a range of conditions, and Washington University physicians continually conduct basic science and clinical research. Physicians from around the world send patients to Barnes-Jewish & Washington University Spine Center, one of the largest clinical spine care practices in the country. U.S. News & World Report ranked Barnes-Jewish within the top 20 hospitals in the country for orthopedic care in 2013.

Baylor University Medical Center (Dallas). More than 9,000 orthopedic surgeries are performed by physicians in Baylor Dallas' orthopedics department each year, including nearly 3,000 total joint replacements. The hospital's offerings include a minimally invasive orthopedic center, total joint program, orthopedic oncology, orthopedic trauma program, spine center and sports performance center. U.S. News & World Report ranked Baylor within the top 25 hospitals in the country for orthopedic care in 2013. Blue Cross Blue Shield has also designated Baylor University Medical Center as a Blue Distinction Center for joint replacements and spine surgery.

Beaumont Hospital (Royal Oak, Mich.). The orthopedic program at 1,070-bed Beaumont, Royal Oak consists of both clinical treatments and innovative research. More than 40 orthopedic surgeons treat cases in every specialty and subspecialty of orthopedics, including minimally invasive hip and knee reconstruction, orthopedic oncology, trauma, hand surgery and advanced spine surgery. The hospital has its own Joint Wear Simulation Laboratory, where researchers test implants in conditions similar to the human body and study alternative bearing surfaces and prosthetic designs. Beaumont, Royal Oak is designated by Blue Cross and Blue Shield as Blue Distinction Center for specialty care in knee and hip replacement and spine surgery.

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (Boston). Beth Israel Deaconess' Carl J. Shapiro Department of Orthopaedics includes orthopedic oncology and trauma, geriatric orthopedics, spine surgery and joint replacement and reconstruction, among other subspecialties. The teaching hospital, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School, is home to advanced limb-sparing surgery procedure and a unique primary care sports medicine service for nonsurgical acute and overuse injuries, as well as chronic pain. Beth Israel Deaconess is a Blue Distinction Center for hip and knee replacements.

Bethesda North Hospital (Cincinnati). Physicians at Bethesda North Hospital and its affiliate Good Samaritan Hospital, both Part of TriHealth, perform more orthopedic surgeries than those of any other system in Greater Cincinnati. Healthgrades awarded Bethesda North for spine surgery excellence and named it one of the country's 50 best hospitals in 2013. Blue Cross and Blue Shield also designated the hospital as a Blue Distinction Center for knee and hip replacements.

Brigham and Women's Hospital (Boston). Robert Breck Brigham Hospital, one of the founding hospitals of Brigham and Women's, was one of the first teaching hospitals in the country wholly devoted to arthritis and related diseases. Brigham and Women's, home to a host of orthopedic expertise, has carried on the torch. Its department of orthopedic surgery is made up of more than 40 physicians between four locations in the greater Boston area who provide a range of orthopedic services, including spine, sports medicine and women's joint disease. The academic medical center's Orthopedic Research Laboratories unite surgeons with researchers to translate clinical trial findings into treatment options.

Bronson Methodist Hospital (Kalamazoo, Mich.). Bronson Orthopedics & Sports Medicine includes more than 20 physicians in nearly every subspecialty within orthopedics and sports medicine. The hospital's sports medicine physicians care for athletes from more than 20 teams and universities, including the Kalamazoo Wings hockey team. The hospital is designated as a Blue Distinction Center from Blue Cross and Blue Shield for knee and hip transplants and spine surgery, and it also received Healthgrades' Joint Replacement Excellence Award for the past three years.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (Los Angeles). The Orthopaedic Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is home to 13 specialized clinical programs, including those for dance medicine, metabolic bone disorders and orthopedic oncology. Late last year, two prominent orthopedic oncologists joined the center. Blue Cross and Blue Shield designated the hospital as a Blue Distinction Center for hip and knee replacements. U.S. News & World Report also ranked the hospital as one of the top 10 for orthopedic care in the country.

Central DuPage Hospital (Winfield, Ill.). Located about 30 miles outside of Chicago, Central DuPage has an orthopedic program with a medical staff of approximately 40 orthopedic surgeons, including specialists in pediatric orthopedics, hand and upper extremity, foot and ankle, spine, joint replacement and sports medicine. Central DuPage, Magnet-accredited for nursing excellence, is the second-most active hospital in Illinois for total joint replacements. U.S. News & World Report ranked it 22nd in the nation for orthopedic care, making it one of three hospitals in the state to earn a top-50 spot.

Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Children's Healthcare of Atlanta is home to the only hospital-based pediatric orthotics and prosthetics practice in Georgia. The hospital's program includes nine specialties, including a pediatric hip and limb deficiency program. Children's Healthcare of Atlanta was the first pediatric facility in the country to use the SpineAssist system, which allows surgeons to preplan procedures in 3-D simulations and use a robotic arm to guide them to the surgical site. In addition to their clinical offerings, orthopedic surgeons and physicians at Children's are continually researching and developing new treatment options.

Children's Hospital Colorado (Aurora). The Orthopedic Institute is home to more than a dozen specialized orthopedic programs and five clinics throughout the Aurora area. The institute's sports program — established in the 1960s and one of the first of its kind in the world — helps children with orthopedic conditions learn to participate in recreational activities. The institute also includes a center for gait and movement analysis, one of roughly 40 in the country. In 2012, families rated their experience at the Orthopedics Institute as excellent or very good 94 percent of the time, and U.S. News & World Report ranked the orthopedic program at Children's Hospital of Colorado as one of the top 10 in the nation for children in 2013.

Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Children's Hospital Los Angeles includes Children's Orthopaedic Center, which is home to a multispecialty team of orthopedic surgeons, oncologists, physical therapists, nurses, biomedical engineers and clinical researchers. The center's John C. Wilson, Jr. Motion Analysis Laboratory — one of only a few in the country — uses advanced technology to assist children who have difficulty walking. Surgeons with Children's Spine Center perform about 250 spine surgeries each year, and U.S. News & World Report ranked Children's Hospital Los Angeles fourth in the nation for orthopedic centers for children in 2013.  

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. CHOP's orthopedic program dates back more than 120 years ago, and the hospital's physicians have pioneered surgical techniques that have since become gold standards in medicine, such as pediatric ACL reconstruction. The hospital's orthopedic surgery department includes a range of specialty programs, including one specifically for hand and arm disorders in which physicians perform more than 1,000 procedures each year for children with congenital deformities, injuries and tumors of the hand and arm. U.S. News & World Report ranked CHOP second in the nation for orthopedic centers for children in 2013.  

Christ Hospital (Cincinnati). The orthopedics and sports medicine program at 555-bed Christ Hospital includes more than a dozen specialists throughout the Cincinnati area. The hospital is building a new Joint and Spine Center, complete with 60 private inpatient rooms, scheduled to open in summer 2015. Blue Cross Blue Shield has recognized the hospital as a Blue Distinction Center for spine surgery and knee and hip replacements. In 2013, U.S. News & World Report ranked Christ Hospital as one of the top 30 in the country for orthopedic care.

Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Cincinnati Children's takes a family-centered approach to pediatric orthopedics and provides care for the full spectrum of conditions. The department includes 10 subspecialty programs, including a brachial plexus center — one of the few in the country to diagnose and treat that condition, which affects movement in the shoulder, arm and hand. In February, Cincinnati Children's surgeons led a mission trip to India to treat children with complex spine deformities. U.S. News & World Report ranked the hospital third in the country for orthopedic care in 2013.

Cleveland Clinic. Cleveland Clinic's Orthopaedic & Rheumatologic Institute combines the system's clinical programs to offer comprehensive treatment for adults and children's bone, joint and connective tissue conditions. Each specialty program within the institute, such as pediatric orthopedics, spine health and musculoskeletal tumors, is active in clinical and translational research for cartilage, tendon and bone tissue engineering. Cleveland Clinic orthopedic surgeons reconstruct thousands of hip and knee joints each year. In September, Cleveland Clinic formed an orthopedic physician hospital organization with three major orthopedic practices across the country to offer joint and spine care to employers.   

Delray Medical Center (Delray Beach, Fla.). Physicians at Delray Medical Center's Center for Advanced Othopaedics provide care for several conditions, including sports injuries, spine treatment and surgery and joint replacements. The hospital's rehabilitative services are housed in Pinecrest Rehabilitation Hospital, located on Delray's campus. Delray has received Healthgrades recognition for orthopedic services, joint replacements, total knee replacements and hip fracture repair for four consecutive years. Blue Cross Blue Shield has also designated Delray Medical Center as a Blue Distinction Center for knee and hip replacements and spine surgery.

Doctors Hospital of Sarasota (Fla.). The Orthopedic and Spine Institute at Doctors Hospital, one of Truven Healthcare's 100 Top Hospitals for 2013, received the Spine Surgery Excellence Award from Healthgrades this year. Along with quality clinical care, the institute upholds the patient experience and provides a range of amenities to ensure patients are comfortable before and after their orthopedic procedures. Blue Cross and Blue Shield also designated Doctors Hospital as a Blue Distinction Center for spine surgery and knee and hip replacements.

Duke University Medical Center (Durham, N.C.). Duke Orthopaedics dates back more than 80 years. The program is considered one of the pioneers for this specialty, as Duke physicians have made several orthopedic breakthroughs. One is the free vascularized fibular graft procedure, which treats bone damage in the hip without a total hip replacement. Duke leads the country in the number of total ankle replacements performed each year, and Duke Orthopaedics' sports medicine program is one of 12 Fédération Internationale de Football Centres of Excellence in the world for FIFA world football.

Emory University Orthopaedics and Spine Hospital (Atlanta). An extension of Emory University Hospital, Emory University Orthopaedics and Spine Hospital is the only dedicated facility for these specialties in the state. Emory specialists perform major joint replacements, minimally invasive orthopedic surgery, spine surgery and more. The hospital has been recognized by Blue Cross Blue Shield as a Blue Distinction Center for knee and hip replacements. CareChex has ranked Emory as one of the top 50 hospitals in the country for major orthopedic surgery in 2014.

Florida Hospital (Orlando). The first patient to receive a total knee replacement in Florida did so at Florida Hospital, which includes Florida Hospital Orthopaedics Institute. Surgeons at the institute have performed more orthopedic surgeries than any other hospital in the state, and the hospital is one of the most-visited hospitals for Medicare patients' joint replacement surgeries. Florida Hospital also specializes in sports medicine and treats some prominent teams and athletes, including the Orlando Magic basketball team.

Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center (LaCrosse, Wis.). Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center's orthopedic program covers several subspecialties, including orthopedic trauma, sports medicine, pediatric orthopedics and many others. The hospital earned Healthgrades' 2014 awards for excellence in spine surgery and orthopedic surgery, along with previous recognition for superior outcomes in hip and knee replacements. CareChex also ranked the hospital as one of the top 20 for orthopedic care in the United States for 2014. Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center is a Blue Distinction Center for hip and knee replacements.

Hackensack (N.J.) University Medical Center. More than 7,000 patients visit HackensackUMC Orthopaedic Institute and its network of more than 50 specialists each year for care, which includes joint replacements, spine treatments, sports medicine treatment, specialized surgery and other services. The hospital has received Healthgrades' Joint Replacement Excellence Award each year since 2009, and U.S. News & World Report ranked HackensackUMC as one of the 50 best in the country for orthopedics.

Henry Ford Hospital (Detroit). The Henry Ford Department of Orthopedic Surgery is one of the largest groups of its kind in the country, with more than 47 clinicians. Henry Ford's orthopedic program is well-known in the world of athletics, as it provides team physicians for the Detroit Lions, Tigers and Red Wings. The hospital also includes a Bone and Joint Research Center that covers a range of disciplines, including motion analysis. Blue Cross and Blue Shield has recognized Henry Ford Hospital as a Blue Distinction Center for knee and hip replacements.
 
Hoag Orthopedic Institute (Irvine, Calif.). Hoag Orthopedic Institute was developed in 2010 by Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, Calif., and a select group of orthopedic physicians in Orange County. The institute is one of three clinical centers in the state to create a pilot registry for joint replacement patients, called the California Joint Replacement Registry, to improve data reporting and outcomes for this specialty. In 2013, U.S. News & World Report named Hoag Memorial Presbyterian as one of the top 50 in the country for orthopedic care.

Holy Cross Hospital (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). Holy Cross Hospital includes an orthopedic institute with several satellite physician office locations. Holy Cross Hospital is a pioneer in the specialty: Its orthopedic team was the first in the world to use a robotic arm for partial knee resurfacing and the first in South Florida for to use the tool for a total hip replacement. It deepened its roots in clinical innovation when it founded the Orthopedic Research Institute in 2010. The hospital has earned Healthgrades' Orthopedic Surgery Excellence award seven years in a row.

Hospital for Special Surgery (New York City). Founded in 1863, the 205-bed Hospital for Special Surgery is the oldest orthopedic hospital in the country, and one of the more internationally prominent, as it treated patients from more than 90 countries in 2012. The hospital has long had ties to some of the country's most elite athletes, and in August, it was designated as an official hospital for U.S. Olympic athletes and teams. The hospital also boasts the lowest surgical site infection rate out of 169 providers for hip replacements in the state of New York. U.S. News & World Report ranked the hospital first the country for orthopedic care in 2013, the 23rd consecutive year it made the publication's top-50 ranking for the specialty.

Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia). Penn Orthopaedic was the first department of orthopedic surgery in the country, as the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania was founded in 1751. In an exciting development for patients, the department recently began offering same-day appointments at all seven of its locations. Its McKay Orthopaedic Research Laboratory is ranked in the top five orthopedic departments in the country in terms of funding from the National Institutes of Health, garnering more than $5 million each year. Blue Cross Blue Shield has recognized the hospital as a Blue Distinction Center for knee and hip replacements.

Houston Methodist Hospital. The Houston Methodist Bone & Joint Center is one of the most active orthopedic surgery centers in the country, taking in more than 3,000 inpatient and about 11,000 outpatient cases each year. Houston Methodist is the official healthcare provider for the Houston Astros, Houston Ballet and several other athletic and performing arts organizations, and its physicians are also highly involved in research. A sports medicine physician from Houston Methodist is collaborating with NASA on research to better understand orthopedic needs unique to astronauts. U.S. News & World Report ranked the hospital as one of the top 25 in the country for orthopedic care in 2013.

Huntington Memorial Hospital (Pasadena, Calif.). The orthopedic program at 625-bed Huntington Memorial encompasses a range of subspecialties and includes 20 orthopedic physicians, along with a team of affiliated professionals and caregivers. The hospital, which includes a Level II trauma center, received Healthgrades' Spine Surgery Excellence Award in 2013 and 2014 for its superior outcomes in back and neck procedures. Huntington Memorial is Magnet-accredited for nursing excellence and is also one of Blue Cross Blue Shield's Blue Distinction Centers for hip and knee replacements.

Iowa Methodist Medical Center (Des Moines). Part of UnityPoint Health, Iowa Methodist Medical Center includes a network of approximately 20 orthopedic specialists. Physicians in system's orthopedic program perform thousands of joint replacements each year — more than 1,500 total knee, 600 total hip and 90 total shoulder. UnityPoint's Methodist, Lutheran and Methodist West hospitals have received recognition from Blue Cross Blue Shield as Blue Distinction Centers for hip and knee replacements and spine surgery, as well.  

IU Health University Hospital (Indianapolis). IU Health University Hospital is partnered with the Indiana University School of Medicine, allowing its physicians to combine innovative treatments with the latest orthopedic research. IU Health's orthopedic department focuses on orthopedic trauma, rehabilitation, spine, joint replacement and several other subspecialties, including sports medicine. U.S. News & World Report ranked the hospital as one of the top 40 in the nation for orthopedic care in 2013.

John Muir Medical Center (Concord and Walnut Creek, Calif.). Two-hospital John Muir Health has the largest, nonacademic orthopedic program in California. The system is home to a network of approximately 30 orthopedic surgeons, and its 267-bed John Muir Medical Center in Concord and 572-bed Walnut Creek medical center were recognized by U.S. News & World Report as two of the top 50 hospitals for orthopedics in 2013. John Muir's Walnut Creek location has been ranked in the top 50 by U.S News & World Report for seven consecutive years, and it is also recognized by Blue Cross Blue Shield as a Blue Distinction Center for spine surgery.

Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore). The Johns Hopkins Department of Orthopaedic Surgery has cared for patients since 1900. Today, the department is led by U.S. Army Col. James Ficke, MD, who is nationally renowned for the treatment of complex foot injuries and amputees, and it includes more than 50 faculty members. The hospital's sports medicine program also treats athletes from the Baltimore Orioles baseball team and Navy Football to high school sports teams. U.S. News & World Report named Johns Hopkins' orthopedic program as one of the top 10 in the country in 2013.  

Lancaster (Pa.) General Hospital. Lancaster General Orthopedic Center includes a sports medicine subspecialty, along with geriatric fracture and total joint replacement programs. The center includes 64 private rooms for general orthopedic patients and 42 beds dedicated to joint replacement patients. Within the center is a physical medicine and rehabilitation gym, making it easier for patients to follow their rehabilitation plans with their physicians and care teams. U.S. News & World Report ranked the hospital as one of the top 50 in the country for orthopedics in 2013.

Lehigh Valley Hospital (Allentown, Pa.). Based about one hour outside of Philadelphia, Lehigh Valley Hospital has a well-regarded bones and joints program through which providers care for a range of conditions, from osteoporosis to total joint replacements to spine disorders. U.S. News & World Report ranked Lehigh Valley as one of the top 50 in the country for orthopedics in 2013, and Blue Cross Blue Shield has recognized Lehigh Valley as a Blue Distinction Center for hip and knee replacement

Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston). Physicians practicing in Massachusetts General Hospital's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery see more than 80,000 patients each year. Last summer, the hospital opened Mass General Orthopaedics Sports Performance Center, which combines advanced 3-D biomechanical imaging technology with the clinical expertise of multidisciplinary Massachusetts General staff to help athletes prevent and recover from injury. U.S. News & World Report ranked Massachusetts General fourth in the nation for orthopedic care in 2013.

Maury Regional Medical Center (Columbia, Tenn.). Maury Regional Medical Center has received Healthgrades' awards for excellence in joint replacement and orthopedic surgery for the past two years. The hospital includes a center devoted to total joint replacements and physical therapy, and Blue Cross Blue Shield has recognized Maury Regional as a Blue Distinction Center for total hip and knee replacements. In its most recent outcomes report, Mary Regional's average length of stay for all orthopedic procedures was below the national average, as was its complications rate.

Mayo Clinic Methodist Hospital (Rochester, Minn.). Mayo Clinic is home to some orthopedic milestones, such as the implantation of the first Food and Drug Administration-approved artificial hip, performed by a Mayo orthopedic surgeon in 1969. Mayo's orthopedic surgery department cares for more than 80,000 patients each year, and this past spring, the hospital announced an expansion to its sports medicine practice to meet growing national and international demand. The hospital receives about $7 million in annual research funding from various sources for orthopedic advancements. U.S. News & World Report ranked Mayo Clinic as the second best hospital in the country for orthopedic care in 2013.

McLaren Orthopedic Hospital (Lansing, Mich.). McLaren Orthopedic Hospital, established in 2004, includes more than 25 orthopedic surgeons. The hospital is home to more than 10,000 outpatient and inpatient procedures each year, and it is the largest dedicated orthopedic hospital in Michigan. The orthopedic hospital is one component of Flint, Mich.-based McLaren Health's offerings in this specialty. Its Flint hospital, McLaren Flint, has been recognized by Blue Cross Blue Shield as a Blue Distinction Center for hip and knee replacements and spine surgery, making it one of 14 hospitals in the state to receive both designations.

MedStar Union Memorial Hospital (Baltimore). MedStar Union Memorial Hospital has been a mainstay in Baltimore for more than 150 years. The 249-bed hospital is linked to a network of roughly 50 orthopedic specialists, and its sports medicine program is home to the official medical team for the Baltimore Ravens. U.S. News & World Report ranked MedStar as the 31st top hospital in the country for orthopedic care in 2013. The hospital also includes the Curtis National Hand Center, the only National Center for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of the Hand and Upper Extremities, as designated by the U.S. Congress.

Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital (Houston). Memorial Hermann Southeast is a 274-bed facility with an extensive network of orthopedic providers and resources at its disposal. For instance, Memorial Hermann Southeast is affiliated with parent company Memorial Hermann's IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute, a comprehensive clinic between the health system and the World Triathlon Corporation where specialists provide care for athletes of all skill levels and ages. The hospital earned Healthgrades' 2014 awards for excellence in orthopedic surgery and joint replacements. CareChex also ranked it as one of the top 10 hospitals for orthopedic care in 2014.

Mercy Hospital (Iowa City). Mercy Hospital's comprehensive orthopedic program includes emergency trauma care, sports medicine, total joint replacement, spine surgery, arthroscopic surgery and a 16-bed skilled nursing facility for patient recovery. The 218-bed hospital earned Healthgrades' Joint Replacement Excellence Award for its superior outcomes in knee and hip replacements for three years in a row, including 2014. Blue Cross Blue Shield also recognized Mercy as a Blue Distinction Center for knee, hip and spine care.

Mon General Hospital (Morgantown, W.Va.). In light of a 20 percent increase in orthopedic procedures performed at the hospital over five years, Mon General opened a new orthopedic center in 2012. The hospital is home to one of the largest networks of orthopedic surgeons out of any hospital in West Virginia, and more than 3,600 orthopedic procedures are performed there each year. The hospital has been recognized by Blue Cross Blue Shield as a Blue Distinction Center for knee and hip replacements.

Mount Carmel Health System East (Columbus, Ohio). More than 60 orthopedic surgeons lead Mount Carmel's comprehensive program, which includes treatment options for the full spectrum of musculoskeletal disorders and injuries. The hospital's orthopedic program includes spine care, sports medicine and total joint replacements, among other subspecialties. In October, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield named Mount Carmel as a preferred provider for its federal health insurance exchange plan for central Ohio.  

Nemours Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children (Wilmington, Del.). The orthopedics program at duPont Hospital for Children is comprehensive, providing treatment options for clubfoot, scoliosis, spinal disorders, gait issues, bone tumors and more. Many noteworthy contributions to the field of orthopedics have stemmed from duPont Hospital for Children. For example, specialists and researchers developed a type of custom-made back brace called the Wilmington, which resembles a jacket and has become a standard treatment option for children with scoliosis. U.S. News & World Report ranked the hospital fifth in the nation for pediatric orthopedic care in 2013.

New England Baptist Hospital (Roxbury Crossing, Mass.). New England Baptist, a teaching affiliate of Tufts University School of Medicine, is the official provider for the Boston Celtics. This fall, the hospital opened an outpatient orthopedic facility in partnership with Shields Health Care Group, an imaging and diagnostic provider. New England Baptist has received recognition from Blue Cross Blue Shield as a Blue Distinction Center for hip and knee replacements, as well as Healthgrades' Joint Replacement Excellence Award. Furthermore, U.S. News & World Report ranked New England Baptist as the 15th hospital in the nation for orthopedic care in 2013.

NewYork-Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell (New York City). NewYork-Presbyterian provides orthopedic services at both its Columbia University Medical Center and Weill Cornell Medical Center, going by Columbia Orthopaedics and Weill Cornell Orthopaedics. The hospital's Center for Hip and Knee Replacement is a major referral center for patients around the country who suffer from hip and knee pain. U.S. News & World Report ranked New York-Presbyterian as one of the top 30 hospitals in the country for orthopedic care in 2013. The hospital also received Healthgrades' Joint Replacement Excellence Award.

 


North Memorial Medical Center (Robbinsdale, Minn.). North Memorial Medical Center was one of the first in the Twin Cities area to have a dedicated joint replacement center. Orthopedic surgeons at the hospital perform a substantial portion of the anterior total hip replacements provided in Minnesota, averaging more than 100 cases per year. The hospital, a Level I trauma center, also offers group therapy and educational sessions for patients undergo orthopedic surgery. Blue Cross Blue Shield has identified North Memorial as a Blue Distinction Center for Hip and Knee Replacement.

North Mississippi Medical Center (Tupelo). North Mississippi Medical Center's Joint Replacement Center is on the fourth floor of the hospital, a 650-bed regional referral center that is the largest private hospital in Mississippi and the largest non-metropolitan hospital in America. More than 550 joint replacements are performed at North Mississippi Medical Center each year The hospital is a Blue Distinction Center for hip and knee replacements — one of four in the state to receive such recognition — and it also received Healthgrades' 2014 awards for excellence in orthopedic surgery and joint replacements.

North Shore University Hospital (Manhasset, N.Y.). The orthopedic department at North Shore University Hospital includes 76 practicing orthopedic surgeons as well as several orthopedic residents and physician assistants. The hospital, part of North Shore-LIJ Health System, is a Level 1 trauma center and is equipped for the most acute orthopedic cases. The system's orthopedic program includes the Orthopaedic Research Library at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. There, clinical researchers recently identified one of the first clinical treatments for osteoarthritis. The institute is partnered with several major sports teams and events to provide sports medicine care, including the New York Jets, the U.S. ski team and the PGA.

Northwest Hospital and Medical Center (Seattle). Northwest Hospital and Medical Center, a 281-bed facility, is part of University of Washington Medicine. It includes a network of more than a dozen physicians who specialize in orthopedics, and its orthopedic program encompasses a broad range of surgical procedures, a joint replacement program, sports medicine and physical therapy. Northwest Hospital is also affiliated with The Sports Medicine Clinic in Seattle, one of the first multidisciplinary sports medicine clinics in the country, established in 1965. The hospital earned Healthgrades' 2013 Spine Surgery Excellence Award for it superior outcomes.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital (Chicago). The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital includes approximately 30 orthopedic surgeons who provide care for a range of bone and joint conditions. The department works in partnership with the highly specialized Northwestern's Center for Surgery of the Hand and Acute Spinal Cord Injury Center. U.S. News & World Report ranked Northwestern in the top 10 hospitals for orthopedic care this year, making it the highest-ranked orthopedic program in Illinois. Blue Cross Blue Shield also recognized the hospital as a Blue Distinction Center for hip and knee replacements.

NYU Langone Medical Center's Hospital for Joint Diseases (New York City). The Hospital for Joint Diseases dates back to 1905, then known as Jewish Hospital for Deformities and Joint Disease. More than a century later, it merged with NYU Langone Medical Center in 2006. The hospital today includes centers dedicated to spine, hip disorders and bone healing, along with one of the world's largest centers for total joint replacements. More than 3,000 total joint replacements are performed at NYU Langone each year. U.S. News & World Report ranked the hospital as one of the top five in the country for orthopedic care in 2013.

Ocala (Fla.) Regional Medical Center. When combined, physicians at the Orthopedic Joint Care Center at 200-bed Ocala Regional Medical Center have more than 145 years of combined experience in bone and joint care. The hospital is home to a large volume of hip and knee replacements — ranking sixth in the state — and it's also recognized by Blue Cross Blue Shield as a Blue Distinction Center for these procedures. Ocala also earned Healthgrades' 2014 Orthopedic Surgery Excellence Award for its superior outcomes in spine surgery, hip fracture care and joint replacements.
 
Ochsner Medical Center (New Orleans). Ochsner Medical Center's orthopedic department includes more than 20 orthopedic surgeons, each of whom has completed a clinical fellowship. Ochsner is also a research and learning hub, offering patients clinical trials, interventional studies and an orthopedic residency program. The hospital received Healthgrades' 2014 Joint Replacement Excellence Award for its superior outcomes in hip and knee surgeries, and it was also named as one of the 50 top hospitals in the country for orthopedics care by U.S. News & World Report in 2013.

Orthopaedic Hospital at Sentara CarePlex (Hampton, Va.). The Orthopaedic Hospital at Sentara CarePlex is one of the only dedicated orthopedic hospitals in the Virginia Peninsula area. Six of Sentara's hospital also house OrthoJoint Centers, which are dedicated to hip and knee joint replacement surgeries. Within the system, physicians from Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, Va., recently led a year-long study on evidence-based protocol for the provision of IV fluids to joint replacement patients, finding that fluids at the right time for patients with low blood pressure can help recovery. Blue Cross Blue Shield also recognized Sentara Leigh as a Blue Distinction Center for hip and knee replacements.

OSU Wexner Medical Center (Columbus). OSU Wexner offers comprehensive orthopedic services, along with dedicated spine and sports medicine centers. The academic medical center also created a specialized Fragility Fracture Program for patients who have experienced fragile bone fractures due to osteoporosis. OSU Wexner includes a comparative orthopedic laboratory, where multidisciplinary teams research gene therapy and genetic markers of orthopedic disease, and an ergonomic lab focused on studies of how human joints respond to various exertions and work processes.  

Pennsylvania Hospital (Philadelphia). Pennsylvania Hospital is affiliated with the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Penn Medicine, or Penn Orthopaedics for short. The program includes some of the most prominent physicians in their specialty, as they serve on the boards of the nation's premier orthopedic organizations and publish articles in many of the leading orthopedic journals. Pennsylvania Hospital is designated as Blue Distinction Center for knee and hip replacements from Blue Cross Blue Shield, and U.S. News & World Report ranked it as the 34th hospital in the country for orthopedic care in 2013.

Physicians Regional – Pine Ridge (Naples, Fla.). Physicians Regional Healthcare System provides orthopedic care at two locations in Naples — it's Pine Ridge and Collier Boulevard sites. Between the two, Physicians Regional's orthopedic team includes more than a dozen physicians and sports medicine specialists. The Pine Ridge hospital earned Healthgrades' 2014 Spine Surgery Excellence Award for its superior outcomes in back and neck surgery, and Blue Cross Blue Shield also recognized it as a Blue Distinction Center for hip and knee replacements.

Poudre Valley Hospital (Fort Collins, Colo.). Poudre Valley Hospital, a 270-bed regional medical center affiliated with University of Colorado Health, is connected to a broad range of expertise and resources for patients' bone and joint care. This includes the hospital's Regional Orthopedic Center and its affiliated Orthopaedic & Spine Center of the Rockies, which includes 24 specialists. The hospital received Healthgrades' 2014 awards for excellence in orthopedic surgery, joint replacements and spine surgery. CareChex ranked the hospital as one of the top 10 for major orthopedic surgery in 2014.

Rady Children's Hospital (San Diego). Rady Children's, the largest children's hospital in California, opened a new center in July that combines all orthopedic and rehabilitation medicine services under one roof. It's a pioneer for pediatric orthopedics and was the first hospital in the country to install a EOS orthopedic imaging machine. The device captures head-to-toe images of patients while they stand and with up to nine times less radiation than standard X-rays. U.S. News & World Report ranked the hospital seventh in the nation for pediatric orthopedic care in 2013, the fifth consecutive year the hospital earned a ranking.

Rex Hospital (Raleigh, N.C.). Rex Hospital includes a medical staff of 40 orthopedic surgeons. The hospital's parent, Rex Healthcare, is partnered with Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic, which is the largest and oldest orthopedic practice in Wake County. This year, through a joint venture, the two opened the Raleigh Orthopaedic Surgery Center, a one-stop outpatient facility that houses a range of orthopedic services. Blue Cross Blue Shield designated the hospital as a Blue Distinction Center for knee and hip replacements.

Riverside Medical Center (Kankakee, Ill.). Based about 60 miles outside of Chicago, 325-bed Riverside Medical Center's orthopedic program includes approximately 10 orthopedic surgeons and sports medicine physicians. Riverside Medical Center received Healthgrades' 2014 Orthopedic Surgery Excellence Award for its superior outcomes in spine surgery, hip fracture treatment, and hip and knee replacements. Blue Cross Blue Shield also recognized Riverside as a Blue Distinction Center for hip and knee replacements.
 
Riverside Methodist Hospital (Columbus, Ohio). Riverside Methodist Hospital, part of Columbus-based OhioHealth, includes a network of upwards of 70 orthopedic surgeons and its Sports Medicine Institute includes more than 30 licensed specialists. The hospital emphasizes minimally invasive treatment options for patients — 80 percent of OhioHealth's spine patients respond to non-surgical treatments, for instance. The hospital also includes leaders in hand and microsurgery, as Riverside Methodist's hand specialists are available 24/7 and treat patients from four neighboring states. Blue Cross Blue Shield has recognized Riverside Methodist as a Blue Distinction Center for hip and knee replacements.

Roper Hospital (Charleston, S.C.). Roper Hospital, part of Roper St. Francis, includes a team of more than 20 accomplished orthopedic surgeons. The system's Roper St. Francis Sports Medicine program provides a full range of orthopedic treatment options to injured athletes. The hospital also includes a geriatric orthopedics program to care for seniors' arthritis, osteoporosis and joint replacement needs. The hospital earned Healthgrades' 2014 awards for joint replacement and orthopedic surgery excellence.

Rush University Medical Center (Chicago). Rush University Medical Center's orthopedic program is far-reaching, offering services for virtually any problem affecting the bones, joints, cartilage and ligaments. The hospital is home to one of the few women's sports medicine programs, and one of the largest musculoskeletal tumor programs, in the nation. Rush is also the preferred medical center for the Chicago White Sox baseball and Bulls basketball teams. Orthopedic surgeon Brian Cole, MD, performed ACL repair surgery on the Bulls' point guard Derrick Rose last May and again this past fall.

Saint Thomas West Hospital (Nashville, Tenn.). Saint Thomas has been an influential orthopedics provider in the Nashville area, as physicians at its Midtown Hospital were the first in the region to perform a total hip replacement in 1969. Saint Thomas Hospital is the orthopedic provider of choice for the Tennessee Titans. Each year, more than 1,500 joint replacements are performed at Saint Thomas Health facilities. CareChex rated the Saint Thomas West as the top hospital the state of Tennessee for joint replacement quality in 2014.

Scottsdale (Ariz.) Healthcare – Shea Medical Center. Shea Medical Center is one of Scottsdale Healthcare's three hospitals, all of which offer comprehensive orthopedic services. The system meets a need for acute-care orthopedics as well, as its Osborn Medical Center is the only Level I Trauma Center in the Arizona with three orthopedic traumatology fellowship-trained surgeons. Shea and Osborn Medical Centers are both recognized by Blue Cross Blue Shield as Blue Distinction Centers for hip and knee replacements.

Scripps Green Hospital (La Jolla, Calif.). Scripps Health is as involved in orthopedic research and advancement as it is patient care. Scripps' physicians are team physicians for the San Diego Padres and athletes who train at the U.S. Olympic Center in Chula Vista. Scripps' Shiley Center for Orthopedic Research and Education investigates the safety and efficacy of new orthopedic therapies and technologies. SCORE's physician director, Clifford Colwell, MD, implanted the world's first electronic knee at Scripps Green Hospital in 2004. Scripps Green received Healthgrades' Joint Replacement Excellence Award for superior outcomes in hip and knee replacements for the past three years, including 2014.

Shands at the University of Florida (Gainesville, Fla.). Shands at the University of Florida is affiliated with the University of Florida's Enneking-Anspach Study Center, an important resource for the advancement and study of orthopedic oncology. Shands orthopedic specialists also serve as providers for the Jacksonville Barracudas hockey team and the University of Florida Gators. Blue Cross Blue Shield has recognized Shands as a Blue Distinction Center for knee and hip replacements and spine surgery.

Seven Rivers Regional Medical Center (Crystal River, Fla.). Seven Rivers Regional Medical Center is a 128-bed facility that has served its community since 1978. The hospital's orthopedic program includes joint replacements, arthritis services, spine care and sports medicine, among other subspecialties. Seven Rivers received Healthgrades' 2014 awards for excellence in spine surgery, joint replacements and orthopedic surgery. It has also been recognized by Blue Cross Blue Shield as a Blue Distinction Center for knee and hip replacements.

St. Francis Hospital (Roslyn, N.Y.). The orthopedic department is one of St. Francis Hospital's busiest, as its specialists perform more than 1,000 procedures each year. Sports medicine is the largest component of St. Francis' orthopedic program. Its chief of orthopedic surgery is one of a small group of surgeons in New York to perform autologous chondrocyte implantation, an advanced procedure to repair damaged articular cartilage in the knee using cartilage cells harvested arthroscopically from the patient. U.S. News & World Report named St. Francis as one of the top 50 hospitals in the country for orthopedic care in 2013.

St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center (Hartford, Conn.). St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center includes The Spine Institute of Connecticut. Orthopedists and neurosurgeons at the institute specialize in spinal disorders and perform the most same-day spine surgeries in Connecticut. The hospital's orthopedic department includes 19 specialists, and more than 1,100 inpatient orthopedic procedures are performed there each year. St. Francis received Healthgrades' 2014 awards for excellence in spine surgery, orthopedic surgery and joint replacements.

St. Mary's Medical Center (San Francisco). In the early 1970s, physicians at St. Mary's Medical Center became some of the first in the Bay Area to provide total joint replacement surgery, and the hospital was also the site of the first total hip replacement in California. Part of Dignity Health, St. Mary's includes a comprehensive range of services, such as joint replacements, spine care and sports medicine. CareChex named it one of the top 100 hospitals in the country for orthopedic care in 2014, and Blue Cross Blue Shield also named it as a Blue Distinction Center for hip and knee replacements and spine care.

St. Joseph's/Candler (Savannah, Ga.). St. Joseph's/Candler includes the Institute for Advanced Bone and Joint Surgery, which more than 3,000 patients visit each year for inpatient and outpatient orthopedic care. Surgeons with the hospital perform more than 450 knee replacements and 150 hip replacements annually. The hospital earned several awards from Healthgrades for its bone and joint services in 2014 and years prior, including distinctions for joint replacement excellence, orthopedic surgery excellence and spine surgery excellence.

St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital. St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital, the flagship of its system, encompasses the St. Vincent Orthopedic Center, a state-of-the-art facility that includes a spine center and joint replacement center. The latter is home to more joint replacements than any other healthcare provider in Indiana. St. Vincent partnered with Indianapolis-based OrthoIndy in 2012 to create the largest orthopedic program in the state. More than 40 sports teams — from professional organizations and universities to junior high schools — seek sports medicine care at St. Vincent, the largest hospital-based sports medicine program in Indiana. St. Vincent also provides pediatric orthopedic care at its Peyton Manning Children's Hospital.

Stanford (Calif.) Hospital and Clinics. Stanford's orthopedics program includes services for nine key clinical specialties and rehabilitative care, including spine, trauma care, musculoskeletal tumors and joint replacement. The orthopedic surgery department has its own research arm with five faculty members overseeing bench-to-bedside innovations. U.S. News & World Report ranked Stanford as the 18th top hospital in the country for orthopedic care in 2013.

Tampa (Fla.) General Hospital. Tampa General, a 1,018-bed hospital, is a regional referral center for complex orthopedic surgery. Its orthopedic trauma program includes a 30-bed unit where physicians can perform the most complex procedures, and the hospital also has a 25-bed joint center for patients to undergo joint replacement surgeries. The hospital has a relationship with the University of South Florida for an orthopedic surgery residency training program. In 2012, more than 1,200 joint replacements were performed at Tampa General. In 2013, U.S. News & World Report ranked Tampa General as the 19th top hospital for orthopedic care in the country.

Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (Dallas). Texas Scottish Rite has provided pediatric orthopedic care for more than 90 years. The hospital's physicians authored "Tachdjian's Pediatric Orthopedics: From Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children," a textbook that has become one of the standard references for orthopedic surgeons around the world. The hospital is especially considered a pioneer in spine care, as its researchers identified the first gene associated with idiopathic scoliosis in 2007. U.S. News & World Report ranked Texas Scottish Rite as the number one hospital in the country for pediatric orthopedics in 2013.

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (Philadelphia). Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is home to the largest orthopedic surgery program in the Delaware Valley. The hospital's Spinal Cord Injury Center is one of the first in the country to treat spinal disease with stereotactic radiosurgery. The Department of Defense recently provided a three-year, $1 million grant to Jefferson Orthopedics researchers to develop treatments that could aid in recovery of joint function for members of the military who have injuries from combat. The hospital has received recognition from Blue Cross Blue Shield as a Blue Distinction Center for hip and knee replacements.

UCLA Medical Center (Los Angeles). The UCLA / Orthopaedic Hospital – Department of Orthopaedic Surgery's name reflects a partnership between UCLA Health System and Orthopaedic Hospital, which was established in 1911. The two organizations partnered in 1998 and have worked together in close proximity to advance orthopedic care in Los Angeles. The hospital recently launched a hand transplant program, one of only a few in the country. UCLA Medical Center has received recognition from Blue Cross Blue Shield as a Blue Distinction Center for hip and knee replacements. The hospital was ranked as one of the top 20 in the country for orthopedic care in 2013 by U.S. News & World Report.

UC San Diego Medical Center. With a clinical faculty of more than 20 orthopedic surgeons, the 548-bed UC San Diego Medical Center provides comprehensive treatment options for patients' bone and joint conditions. The hospital's program includes a Center for Joint Care, along with specialists in orthopedic oncology, trauma and spine care. Physician-scientists are also active in several clinical research projects to advance patients' treatment options. Blue Cross Blue Shield designated UCSD Medical Center as a Blue Distinction Center for spine surgery and hip and knee replacements.   

UCSF Medical Center (San Francisco). UCSF takes a comprehensive approach to orthopedics, with several centers dedicated to specific specialties, such as arthritis and joint replacements, cartilage repair and regeneration and orthotic and prosthetics, among many others. UCSF Spine Center is one of the largest centers of its kind in the U.S., treating 10,000 patients each year. The hospital's orthopedics department includes an outreach program, PlaySafe, that brings certified athletic trainers and physicians to high school events around the Bay Area. U.S. News & World Report ranked UCSF as the 14th best hospital in the country for orthopedics in 2013.

University of Rochester (N.Y.) Medical Center. University of Rochester Medical Center's Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation program covers every subspecialty of orthopedics. It includes more than 40 specialists who treat more than 170,000 patients each year. The hospital and its clinicians are also dedicated to research in the specialty and have attracted the resources to further their initiatives. In September, Swiss entrepreneur and philanthropist Hansjörg Wyss donated $2 million to the University of Rochester to support URMC's clinical research related to geriatric fracture care. URMC's affiliate, Highland Hospital, is one of Blue Cross Blue Shield's Blue Distinction Centers for joint replacements.
 
University Hospitals Case Medical Center (Cleveland). University Hospitals' orthopedics department, which is more than 100 years old, is made up of 10 clinical divisions and includes almost 30 specialists, from orthopedic surgery to pediatric sports medicine. The program has a dual focus on clinical treatment and research, as all physicians are also full-time faculty members at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, which has been one of the top 10 sites for National Institutes of Health research funding. U.S. News & World Report ranked University Hospitals as the 16th best orthopedic program in the country in 2013.  

University Medical Center (Tucson, Ariz.). University Medical Center's orthopedic program's history spans back to 1971. It includes six clinical subspecialties, including spine surgery, pediatric surgery and musculoskeletal trauma care, as the hospital has the only Level I trauma center in southern Arizona. Physicians in University Medical Center's orthopedic department perform approximately 285 operative cases and treat about 1,600 patients each month. The program includes nearly a dozen orthopedic specialists and the Arizona Arthritis Center, which was established in 1985. University Medical Center has received recognition from Blue Cross Blue Shield as a Blue Distinction Center for hip and knee replacements.

University of Chicago Medical Center. The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Chicago Medicine, the hospital's parent, is comprised of 11 subspecialty programs, including spine care, sports medicine, pediatric orthopedics and bone cancer, among others. University of Chicago physicians developed techniques for ligament reconstruction and flexor tendon repairs that became standard protocol for hand and wrist care in orthopedic centers across the country. The academic medical center has received recognition from Blue Cross Blue Shield as a Blue Distinction Center for hip and knee replacements.

University of Colorado Hospital (Aurora). University of Colorado Hospital has a bones, joint and muscle program that offers care for arthritis, joint injuries and replacements, foot injuries and several other conditions. The hospital has its own sports medicine center, and its physicians care for athletes from the University of Colorado and University of Denver. University of Colorado Hospital is also active in orthopedic research. It's part of the Multicenter Orthopedic Outcomes Network, which collects data on ACL injuries to identify risk factors that may affect the outcomes of ACL surgery and recovery.

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (Iowa City). The Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics dates back to 1913. The department treats children and adult's orthopedic conditions, and also provides sports medicine, spine care and hand, foot and ankle treatments. U.S. News & World Report ranked University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics as one of the top 30 hospitals in the country for orthopedic care in 2013. The hospital has also received recognition from Blue Cross Blue Shield as a Blue Distinction Center for spine surgery.

University of Michigan Medical Center (Ann Arbor). U-M Medical Center's orthopedic department is made up of nearly 30 faculty with interests in a broad range of orthopedic clinical areas, research and education. The academic medical center offers highly specialized care and services, such as its Fragility Fracture Clinic, which was established to treat people over the age of 50 who have an osteoporosis-related fractured. The hospital is also influential in orthopedic research. Earlier this year, U-M researchers identified how a specific group of genes can activate cells that cause rheumatoid arthritis, which helps explain why some people are more likely to develop the condition than others.

University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview (Minneapolis). The orthopedics and sports medicine department at the 885-bed University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview includes 25 orthopedic surgeons and sports medicine physicians, in addition to several rheumatologists, podiatrists and rehabilitation physicians. The hospital's program is part of Fairview Sports and Orthopedic Care, which is the official provider for several athletic teams, including the NSC Minnesota United professional soccer team.

UPMC (Pittsburgh). UPMC's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery includes 11 subspecialties and a robust research arm, made up of 13 different laboratories in which scientists conduct evidence-based research and clinical trials. The system's sports medicine program provides care for some of Pittsburgh's top professional athletes, including the Steelers football team and Penguins hockey team, and its surgeons perform more than 1,500 procedures each year to treat patients' spine, neck and back conditions. U.S. News & World Report ranked UPMC as the 11th top hospital in the country for orthopedics in 2013.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center (Nashville, Tenn.). More than 110,000 patients receive orthopedic care at Vanderbilt Orthopaedics each year. The academic medical center's orthopedic program includes more than 50 specialists and 10 subspecialty divisions. Vanderbilt Sports Medicine is also the coordinating center for three very large research endeavors, such as the Multicenter Orthopaedic Outcomes Network, which was established in 2001 to look at how people do after undergoing an ACL reconstruction. Vanderbilt University Medical Center has been named a Blue Distinction Center for spine surgery care by Blue Cross Blue Shield, and U.S. News & World Report also ranked the hospital as one of the top 50 in the country for orthopedics in 2013.

Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center (Richmond). The 865-bed Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center includes a network of roughly 20 orthopedic specialists. The hospital, which includes the only Level 1 trauma center in the region, is also home to a substantial amount of orthopedic research and education, offering fellowships in orthopedic trauma, joint replacement and reconstruction surgery. U.S. News & World Report ranked Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center as one of the top 40 hospitals in the country for orthopedics in 2013.  

Virginia Hospital Center (Arlington). Many of Virginia Hospital's orthopedic surgeons serve as team physicians or consulting specialists for several professional teams in the Washington, D.C. area, including the Washington Redskins and the professional soccer club D.C. United. Through its total joint replacement program, physicians at the hospital have performed more than 4,200 procedures since 2001. CareChex ranked Virginia Hospital Center as one of the top 50 providers in the country for orthopedic care in 2014.
 
Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center (Winston-Salem, N.C.). Orthopedic surgeons and specialists at Wake Forest Baptist treat routine and complex conditions at the hospital and several satellite locations. The hospital is home to one of the most comprehensive joint replacement programs in the Winston-Salem area and innovative orthopedic research, as Wake Forest Baptist's orthopedic researchers are studying the use of keratin gel in the regeneration of peripheral nerves in limbs as part of a $2.2 million, four-year grant from the Department of Defense. U.S. News & World Report ranked Wake Forest Baptist as one of the top 50 hospitals in the country for orthopedic care in 2013.
