100 Hospital and Health System CMOs to Know

Becker's Hospital Review has named "100 Hospital and Health System CMOs to Know," a list based on individuals' experience in overseeing medical and quality affairs at their respective organizations. The CMOs listed here are indispensable members of hospital and health system leadership teams and have demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement in safety and quality.

Ken Anderson, DO. Chief Medical Quality Officer of NorthShore University HealthSystem (Evanston, Ill.).
Dr. Anderson has served as chief medical quality officer of NorthShore University HealthSystem since March 2008. He also serves as co-chair of the steering committee that governs the system's Center for Clinical and Research Informatics.

David A. Ansell, MD, MPH. Senior Vice President of Clinical Affairs and CMO of Rush University Medical Center (Chicago).
In addition to serving as senior vice president of clinical affairs and CMO of Rush University Medical Center, Dr. Ansell is associate dean of clinical affairs at Rush Medical College in Chicago and chair of the Metropolitan Chicago Breast Cancer Task Force. He practiced at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, now known as John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County, for 17 years.

Stanley W. Ashley, MD. CMO of Brigham and Women's Hospital (Boston).
Dr. Ashley became CMO of Brigham and Women's Hospital in June 2011. He also serves as the Frank Sawyer Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School as well as vice chairman of the department of surgery at Brigham and Women's. He came to the hospital in 1997 after spending seven years at the University of California at Los Angeles.

Kelvin Baggett, MD. CMO of Tenet Healthcare (Dallas).
Dr. Baggett was named CMO of 49-hospital Tenet in October 2009. He previously served as COO of Nashville, Tenn.-based Hospital Corporation of America and vice president of clinical strategy for the HCA Clinical Services Group. Prior to holding those positions, Dr. Baggett served as an internal strategic business consultant for HCA.

Stephen Beck, MD. CMIO of Catholic Health Partners (Cincinnati). Dr. Beck became chief medical information officer of Catholic Health Partners in July 2011 after serving as interim CMIO for one month. He previously served as the system's chief ambulatory medical information officer. While Catholic Health Partners does not have a CMO position, Dr. Beck fulfills the responsibilities of that role. He has practiced ambulatory and inpatient internal medicine.

Myron Berdischewsky, MD. Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Quality Officer of Providence Health & Services (Renton, Wash.).
Dr. Berdischewsky became senior vice president and chief medical and quality officer of Providence in July 2011. He previously served as CMO of the system's Southern California region.

Eric Bieber, MD. CMO of University Hospitals (Cleveland). In addition to serving as CMO of University Hospitals, Dr. Bieber is president of University Hospitals Accountable Care Organization. He joined the system as CMO in January 2010 after serving as executive vice president for strategic network development at Geisinger Health System in Danville, Pa.

Donald Bignotti, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Trinity Health (Novi, Mich.). Dr. Bignotti became senior vice president and CMO of Trinity Health in fall 2011. He previously served for six years as CMO of St. Joseph Mercy Oakland in Pontiac, Mich., which is part of Trinity Health. He also taught family medicine and geriatrics to residents at Bon Secours Hospital and St. John Hospital, both in Grosse Pointe, Mich.

Joseph E. Bisordi, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Ochsner Health System (New Orleans).
Dr. Bisordi has served as executive vice president and CMO of Ochsner Health System since 2008. He previously served as associate CMO of Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger Health System and CMO of Geisinger Medical Center.

Jeremy Boal, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System (Great Neck, N.Y.). In addition to serving as senior vice president and CMO of North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System, Dr. Boal holds The Lawrence Scherr, MD, Endowed Professorship at Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine. He previously served as medical director of Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, N.Y.

William A. Bornstein, MD, PhD. Chief Quality Officer of Emory Healthcare (Atlanta).
Dr. Bornstein was named Emory Healthcare's first chief quality officer in 2003. He previously served as chief quality officer and associate administrator of Emory Crawford Long Hospital from 1999 to 2000, when his role expanded to include all Emory hospitals.

Albert Bothe Jr., MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Geisinger Health System (Danville, Pa.). Dr. Bothe is executive vice president and CMO of Geisinger Health System. He joined the system in 2006 and has served in several positions since, including chief quality officer and CMO of Geisinger Medical Center.

Patrick J. Brennan, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of University of Pennsylvania Health System (Philadelphia). Dr. Brennan has served as senior vice president and CMO of the University of Pennsylvania Health System since 2005. He previously served as chief of healthcare quality and patient safety at the system for four years. Dr. Brennan has been a faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania since 1998.

Stephen T. Brown III, MD. Chief Medical Executive of Centura Health (Englewood, Colo.). Dr. Brown became chief medical executive of Centura Health in 2008. He joined the system in 2000 as CMO and vice president of medical affairs of St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center in Pueblo, Colo.

Linda Butler, MD. Vice President of Medical Affairs, CMO and CMIO of Rex Healthcare (Raleigh, N.C.). Dr. Butler became CMO of Rex Healthcare, which includes the 660-bed Rex Hospital, in 2009. She was a pediatrician in Wake County, N.C., for more than 13 years prior to her current appointment.

Darrell A. Campbell Jr., MD. CMO of University of Michigan Health System (Ann Arbor). In addition to serving as CMO of University of Michigan Health System, Dr. Campbell is the Henry King Ransom Professor of Surgery in the department of surgery. He has also worked with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan to develop a surgical quality improvement program in 52 Michigan hospitals.

Justine Carr, MD. Senior Vice President of Quality and Safety and CMO of Steward Health Care System (Boston). Dr. Carr, a hematologist, is CMO of 11-hospital Steward Health Care System. She previously served as CMO of Boston-based Caritas Christi Health Care, which was acquired by Steward in 2010.  

Robert A. Cherry, MD, MS, CPE. Vice President of Clinical Effectiveness and CMO of Loyola University Health System (Maywood, Ill.). Dr. Cherry was named vice president of clinical effectiveness and CMO of Loyola University Health System in January 2011. He previously served for eight years at Penn State Milton S. Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center as section chief of trauma and critical care, medical director of the trauma program and associate chief quality officer.

Ralph R. Clark, MD. Vice President of Clinical Activities and CMO of Virginia Commonwealth University Health System (Richmond). Dr. Clark serves as vice president of clinical activities and CMO of Virginia Commonwealth University Health System. He previously served as associate professor in the department of internal medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Paul Convery, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Baylor Health Care System (Dallas). Dr. Convery serves as senior vice president and CMO of Baylor Health Care System, which he joined in February 2006. He previously served as CMO of SSM Health Care in St. Louis.

Lanny R. Copeland, MD. CMO of LifePoint Hospitals (Brentwood, Tenn.).
Dr. Copeland serves as CMO of LifePoint Hospitals, which he joined in 2007. He previously served as vice president of medical affairs for Triad Hospitals in Plano, Texas, and vice president of primary care development for Phoebe Putney Health System in Albany, Ga.

Gaurov Dayal, MD. Senior Vice President of Physician Innovation and Integration and CMO of SSM Health Care (St. Louis).
Dr. Dayal became SSM Health Care's first senior vice president of physician innovation and integration and CMO in February 2012. He previously served as senior vice president and system CMO of Adventist HealthCare in Rockville, Md.

Ananias C. Diokno, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Beaumont Health System (Royal Oak, Mich.). Dr. Diokno became executive vice president and CMO of Beaumont Health System in September 2006. He served as chairman of the department of urology at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak from 1984 to 2007 and was the first Peter & Florine Ministrelli Distinguished Chair in Urology from 2006 to 2007.

Keith R. Doram, MD, MBA. Vice President for Clinical Effectiveness and CMO of Adventist Health (Roseville, Calif.). Dr. Doram has served as vice president for clinical effectiveness and CMO of Adventist Health since October 2006. He previously served as CMO of Christiana Care Health System in Wilmington, Del., since 2004.

Erin DuPree, MD. CMO of The Mount Sinai Medical Center (New York City). Dr. DuPree was named CMO of The Mount Sinai Medical Center in September 2012. She previously served as the hospital's vice president for patient safety, vice chair of quality for obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences, and deputy CMO.

A. Brent Eastman, MD. Corporate Senior Vice President and CMO of Scripps Health (San Diego). In addition to serving as corporate senior vice president and CMO of Scripps Health, Dr. Eastman is the N. Paul Whittier Chair of Trauma for Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla (Calif.). He began his career with Scripps in 1972 in the practice of general, vascular and trauma surgery.

Linda Efferen, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of South Nassau Communities Hospital (Oceanside, N.Y.). Dr. Efferen serves as senior vice president and CMO of South Nassau Communities Hospital. Prior to her current role, Dr. Efferen was associate chair in the department of medicine at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, N.Y., for more than eight years.

Dale Fell, MD. Senior Vice President and System CMO of Mission Health (Asheville, N.C.). Dr. Fell's role as CMO of Mission Hospital, which he held since 2005, expanded to system CMO of Mission Health in October 2012. He previously served as chairman of the department of surgery at Lee Memorial Hospital in Ft. Myers, Fla.

Brian Fillipo, MD, MMM. Chief Quality Officer and CMO of Guthrie Health (Sayre, Pa.). Dr. Fillipo was named CMO and chief quality officer of Guthrie Health in April 2012. He previously served as vice president for medical affairs of St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond, Va., part of Bon Secours Healthcare System in Marriottsville, Md.

Loring Flint, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Inova Health System (Falls Church, Va.).
Dr. Flint serves as executive vice president and CMO of Inova Health System. He previously spent 20 years at Springfield, Mass.-based Baystate Health, where he served as CMO of the system and president of Baystate Medical Practices.

Timothy Flynn, MD. CMO of Shands at the University of Florida (Gainesville).
Dr. Flynn was named senior associate dean for clinical affairs at University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville and CMO of Shands at UF in September 2010. He has worked at the college for 28 years, serving as chief of surgery at the Malcom Randall Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Gainesville, in addition to other leadership positions.

Michael R. Foley, MD. CMO of Scottsdale (Ariz.) Healthcare.
Dr. Foley became CMO in 2008 after having served as medical director of academic affairs and chief academic officer for one year. Prior to joining Scottsdale Healthcare, he worked in a perinatal practice and he still maintains a limited clinical practice in maternal fetal medicine. He is a past president of the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine and is a board examiner in maternal fetal medicine.

Carol Freer, MD. CMO of Penn State Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center. Dr. Freer was named CMO of Penn State Hershey Medical Center in January 2012. She joined the hospital in 2008 as associate professor of medicine and director of hospitalist outreach, and became vice chair for clinical affairs in the department of medicine in 2009.



R. Wayne Gandee, MD. CMO of Carilion Clinic (Roanoke, Va.).
Dr. Gandee became CMO of Carilion Clinic in 2011. He joined the system in November 2006 as chair and medical director of the department of radiology. He also serves as assistant professor of the department of radiology at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.

Kenneth Garay, MD. CMO of LibertyHealth System (Jersey City, N.J.).
Dr. Garay, a practicing otolaryngologist, is CMO of LibertyHealth System. He played a large role in helping LibertyHealth's Jersey City Medical Center recruit more than 250 private community physicians to the medical staff over the past four years.

Berc Gawne, MD. Vice President and CMO of The Christ Hospital (Cincinnati). Dr. Gawne serves as vice president and CMO of The Christ Hospital. He previously served as CMO of the Central Illinois Region of Mokena, Ill.-based Provena Health.

John Gillean, MD. Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer of Christus Health (Irving, Texas).
Dr. Gillean became executive vice president and chief clinical officer of Christus Health in May 2011. In this role he has the responsibilities of a CMO. He previously served as the system's senior vice president and CMO since the formation of Christus Health in 1999.

Jonathan E. Gottlieb. Senior Vice President and CMO of University of Maryland Medical Center (Baltimore). Dr. Gottlieb was named senior vice president and CMO of University of Maryland Medical Center in July 2009. He previously served as CMO of Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis and professor of medicine and assistant vice chancellor for clinical affairs at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Richard Graffis, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Indiana University Health (Indianapolis). Dr. Graffis was named executive vice president and CMO of Indiana University Health in February 2003. He has been affiliated with IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis since his residency in 1971, and was the first president of the IU Health medical staff.

Loran D. Hauck, MD. Senior Vice President of Clinical Effectiveness and CMO of Adventist Health System (Altamonte Springs, Fla.).
Dr. Hauck is CMO and senior vice president of clinical effectiveness of Adventist Health System. He previously served as president and CEO of Sunbelt Medical Management and medical director of Gordon Hospital in Calhoun, Ga.

Ziad Haydar, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Ascension Health (St. Louis).
Dr. Haydar serves as senior vice president and CMO of Ascension Health. He joined the system in 2010 as vice president of clinical excellence and physician integration. He previously served as vice president for health care improvement and director of the Center for Health Care Improvement of Baylor Health Care System in Dallas.

John Hensing, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Banner Health (Phoenix).
Dr. Hensing was named executive vice president and CMO of Banner Health in 2009. He joined the system, then called Samaritan Health System, as senior vice president in 1995. He practiced internal medicine in Tempe, Ariz., for 18 years.

Russell M. Howerton, MD. Vice President and CMO of Wake Forest Baptist Health (Winston-Salem, N.C.). Dr. Howerton was named CMO of Wake Forest Baptist Health in November 2010. He previously served as vice CMO since 2009 and associate chief of professional services since 2004.

Gordon Hunt, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Sutter Health (Sacramento, Calif.).
Dr. Hunt serves as senior vice president and CMO of Sutter Health. He joined the system in 1994 as vice president for medical affairs and became vice president for clinical integration of Sutter Health Center in 1996.

S. Shiraz Hyder, MD. Vice President of Medical Affairs of St. Alexius Medical Center (Bismarck, N.D.). Dr. Hyder, a neurologist, serves as vice president of medical affairs of St. Alexius Medical Center. He joined St. Alexius Specialty Clinics in December 1996. While St. Alexius Medical Center does not have a CMO position, Dr. Hyder fulfills a CMO's responsibilities.

Richard Iseke, MD. Vice President of Medical Affairs and CMO of Winchester (Mass.) Hospital. Dr. Iseke joined Winchester Hospital as vice president of medical affairs and CMO in January 2007. He previously served as vice president of clinical affairs at Lawrence (Mass.) General Hospital.

Andrew Jacobs, MD. CMO of Virginia Mason Medical Center (Seattle). Dr. Jacobs joined Virginia Mason Medical Center in 2004 and has served as CMO there since 2007. He is also assistant professor of medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle.

John V. Jurica, MD, MPH. Senior Vice President and CMO of Riverside Medical Center (Kankakee, Ill.).
Dr. Jurica became senior vice president and CMO of Riverside Medical Center in September 2011. Prior to his current appointment, he served as vice president for medical affairs since 1999.

Alan S. Kaplan, MD. Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer of Iowa Health System (Des Moines).
Dr. Kaplan serves as senior vice president and chief clinical officer of Iowa Health System and president and CEO of Iowa Health Physicians & Clinics. His responsibilities encompass those of a CMO. He joined the system in 2009 after serving as vice president and CMO of Edward Health Services in Naperville, Ill.

Jeffry Komins, MD. Executive Vice President, CMO and Chief Quality Officer of Catholic Health East (Newtown Square, Pa.).
Dr. Komins was named executive vice president, chief quality officer and CMO of Catholic Health East in February 2011. He previously served as CMO of Mercy Health System of Southeastern Pennsylvania in Conshohocken, which is part of Catholic Health East.

Mary Kuffel, MD. CMO of Gundersen Lutheran Health System (La Crosse, Wis.).
Dr. Kuffel, a practicing obstetrician gynecologist, serves as CMO of Gundersen Lutheran Health System. She joined the system in 1997 and holds an adjunct clinical faculty position at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

Steven Landgarten, MD. Chief Quality Officer and CMO of Ardent Health Services (Nashville, Tenn.).
Dr. Landgarten serves as chief quality officer and CMO of Ardent Health Services. He is a practicing internal medicine and endocrinology physician with
nearly 40 years of experience. Previously, Dr. Landgarten served as a major in the U.S. Army Medical Corps.

Michael L. Langberg, MD. Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs and CMO of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (Los Angeles). Dr. Langberg serves as senior vice president for medical affairs and CMO of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center as well as adjunct professor of medicine at David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Richard S. Liebowitz, MD, MHS. Senior Vice President and CMO of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (New York City). Dr. Liebowitz became senior vice president and CMO of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in October 2012. He previously served as CMO of NewYork Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center since 2011. He joined NewYork Presbyterian in 2006 as vice president of medical affairs.

John Lynch, MD. CMO of Barnes-Jewish Hospital (St. Louis).
Dr. Lynch was named CMO of Barnes-Jewish Hospital in July 2009. He has been a member of the hospital's medical staff since 1995, and is also a faculty member of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

John M. MacKeigan, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Spectrum Health (Grand Rapids, Mich.). Dr. MacKeigan was on Spectrum Health's medical staff for more than 30 years before becoming executive vice president and CMO of Spectrum Health in September 2009. He previously served as chair of the board and CMO of MMPC, a multispecialty physician group that joined Spectrum Health in August 2009.

Hagop Mekhjian, MD. CMO of The Ohio State University Health System and Ohio State University Hospital (Columbus).
Dr. Mekhjian is CMO of The Ohio State University Health System and Ohio State University Hospital. He has been a physician on the hospital's medical staff for more than 40 years and previously served as medical director of the hospital.

Geno J. Merli, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Jefferson University Hospitals (Philadelphia). Dr. Merli became senior vice president and CMO of Jefferson University Hospitals in 2007. He has been with Jefferson for more than 35 years, including time spent as internal medicine director and vice chair of clinical affairs.

Edward J. Merrens, MD. CMO of Dartmouth-Hitchcock (Lebanon, N.H.).
Dr. Merrens serves as CMO of Dartmouth-Hitchcock and is a trustee of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic. He developed the concept of a hospital medicine program at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in 2004.  

Redonda Miller, MD, MBA. Vice President for Medical Affairs of The Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore). Dr. Miller became vice president for medical affairs of The Johns Hopkins Hospital in July 2009. In this role, she leads medical staff functions and serves as CMO and patient safety officer of the hospital. She previously served as vice chair for clinical operations of the Johns Hopkins Department of Medicine and assistant dean for student affairs for the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Mark R. Montoney, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Vanguard Health Systems (Nashville, Tenn.). Dr. Montoney joined Vanguard Health Systems as executive vice president and CMO in 2008. He previously served as system vice president and CMO of OhioHealth in Columbus.

Stephen Moore, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Catholic Health Initiatives (Englewood, Colo.).
Dr. Moore serves as senior vice president and CMO of Catholic Health Initiatives, which includes 81 hospitals across 19 states. Before joining CHI in March 2009, he served as senior vice president of clinical quality and patient safety for Inova Health System in Falls Church, Va.

Adam L. Myers, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Methodist Health System (Dallas).
Dr. Myers became Methodist Health System's senior vice president and its first CMO in June 2010. He previously served as national medical advisor and a consultant for Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems since 2007.

 



Janice E. Nevin, MD, MPH. CMO of Christiana Care Health System (Wilmington, Del.). Dr. Nevin became CMO of Christiana Care Health System in 2011. She served as senior vice president and executive director of Christiana Care-Wilmington (Del.) and associate CMO of the system from 2008 until her current appointment.

Andrew Norton, MD. CMO of Main Line Health (Bryn Mawr, Pa.).
Dr. Norton was named CMO of Main Line Health in July 2012. He previously served as senior vice president of medical affairs and CMO of Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee.

Stephen Ondra, MD. CMO of Northwestern Memorial Hospital (Chicago).
Dr. Ondra, a neurosurgeon, was named senior vice president and CMO of Northwestern Memorial Hospital in April 2012. He previously served as senior policy advisor for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Barbara R. Paul, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Community Health Systems (Franklin, Tenn.).
Dr. Paul, a board-certified internist, became senior vice president and CMO of Community Health Systems in August 2006. She previously served as senior vice president and CMO of Beverly Enterprises, a company that provides healthcare services to seniors.

Jonathan B. Perlin, MD, PhD, MSHA. President of Clinical and Physician Services Group and CMO of Hospital Corporation of America (Nashville, Tenn.). Dr. Perlin has served as president of the clinical and physician services group and CMO of HCA since 2006. He previously served as secretary for health in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and CEO of the Veterans Health Administration.

Bruce G. Pitts, MD. CMO of Sanford Health (Fargo, N.D., and Sioux Falls, S.D.). Dr. Pitts serves as CMO of Sanford Health, which includes 35 hospitals across eight states. He previously served as CMO of Sanford Health of Northern Minnesota and president of Sanford Health Clinic in Fargo, N.D.

Donald A. Pocock, MD, CPE. CMO of Morton Plant Mease Health Care (Clearwater, Fla.).
Dr. Pocock, a board-certified internist, has served as CMO of Morton Plant Mease Health Care since 2005. He previously served as vice president of medical affairs and CMO of Roper St. Francis Healthcare in Charleston, S.C.

John Popovich, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Henry Ford Health System (Detroit). Dr. Popovich became executive vice president and CMO of Henry Ford Health System in January 2013. He previously served as president and CEO of Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Dr. Popovich joined Henry Ford Hospital in 1980 as a senior staff physician.

Robert A. Press, MD, PhD. CMO of NYU Langone Medical Center (New York City). Dr. Press has served as CMO of NYU Langone Medical Center since June 2007. He has been a member of the division of faculty since 1978. Dr. Press provided inpatient infectious disease consultations and saw patients in the outpatient setting before his current position.

Marlon Priest, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Bon Secours Health System (Marriottsville, Md.).
Dr. Priest serves as executive vice president and CMO of Bon Secours Health System. Before he joined the system in December 2006, he served as a professor of emergency medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and surgery and chief quality officer of UAB Hospital.

Andrew Racine, MD, PhD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Montefiore Medical Center (New York City). Dr. Racine was named senior vice president and CMO of Montefiore Medical Center in July 2012. He previously served as professor and division chief of general pediatrics at The Children's Hospital at Montefiore/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City.

Jon Rahman, MD. System Vice President and CMO of St. Vincent Health (Indianapolis). Dr. Rahman has served as system vice president and CMO of St. Vincent Health since 2003. He joined the system in 2000 as vice president of network relationship development after serving as CMO for Health Alliance Medical Plans in Urbana, Ill.

Roger A. Ray, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Carolinas HealthCare System (Charlotte, N.C.). Dr. Ray is executive vice president and CMO of Carolinas HealthCare System, which he joined in 2007. He previously served as chief quality officer of Clearwater, Fla.-based BayCare Health System.

Craig D. Rhyne, MD. CMO of Covenant Health System (Lubbock, Texas). Dr. Rhyne, a board-certified surgeon, became CMO of Covenant Health System in April 2011. He has served in several leadership roles at Covenant, including medical director of trauma and chair of the Trauma Peer Review Committee and the Trauma Section Committee.

Ronald N. Riner, MD. CMO of Health Management Associates (Naples, Fla.). Dr. Riner, a board-certified cardiovascular specialist, has served as CMO of HMA since 2007. In addition, he has been president and CEO of his own healthcare management company for roughly 30 years.

Lee Sacks, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Advocate Health Care (Oak Brook, Ill.). Dr. Sacks is executive vice president and CMO of Advocate Health Care and president of Advocate Physician Partners. In 2010, he received the Robert Graham Physician Executive Award from the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Kenneth Sands, MD, MPH. Senior Vice President of Health Care Quality of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (Boston). Dr. Sands is senior vice president of health care quality for Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston. He holds the responsibilities of a CMO in his role at the hospital and is board certified in internal medicine.

Ihor Sawczuk, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Hackensack (N.J.) University Medical Center.
Dr. Sawczuk was named executive vice president and CMO of Hackensack University Medical Center in December 2011. He previously served as HackensackUMC's vice president, chief academic officer, chairman of the department of urology and chief of the division of urologic oncology at HackensackUMC's John Theurer Cancer Center.

Michael Shabot, MD. CMO of Memorial Hermann Healthcare System (Houston). Dr. Shabot, board certified in general surgery and surgery critical care, serves as CMO of Memorial Hermann Healthcare System. He previously served as the system's chief quality officer. Dr. Shabot also serves as an adjunct professor at The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston.

Steven Shapiro, MD. Executive Vice President and Chief Medical and Scientific Officer of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Shapiro serves as executive vice president and chief medical and scientific officer of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He joined UPMC in 2006 after serving as chief of pulmonary and critical care medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston.

Allan D. Siefkin, MD. CMO of University of California Davis Medical Center (Sacramento).
Dr. Siefkin serves as CMO of University of California Davis Medical Center. He joined UC Davis as a pulmonologist after completing his residency at the medical center in 1979.

Michael Skehan, MD. Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs, Senior Physician Executive and CMO of Martin Health System (Stuart, Fla.).
Dr. Skehan became senior vice president for medical affairs, senior physician executive and CMO of Martin Health System in November 2012. He previously served as CMO of Indiana University Health Quality Partners since 2010.

Brent Smith, MD. Vice President of Clinical Integration and CMO of Edward Hospital & Health Services (Naperville, Ill.). Dr. Smith serves as vice president of clinical integration and CMO of Edward Hospital & Health Services. He previously served as corporate director of clinical integration for the system.

Paul Summerside, MD. CMO of BayCare Clinic and Aurora BayCare Medical Center (Green Bay, Wis.). Dr. Summerside, an emergency physician, has served as CMO and president of the board of BayCare Clinic and Aurora BayCare Medical Center since 1999.  

Erik Swensson, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Capella Healthcare (Franklin, Tenn.).
Dr. Swensson was named senior vice president and CMO of Capella Healthcare in January 2011. He has served in several leadership positions, including chief of staff, at Willamette Valley Medical Center in McMinnville, Ore., which joined Capella in February 2008.

Andreas Theodorou, MD. CMO of University and South Campuses of University of Arizona Health Network (Tucson).
Dr. Theodorou serves as CMO of the University and South Campuses of University of Arizona Health Network. He is also a UA professor of pediatrics, chief of pediatric critical care medicine and associate head of the network's department of pediatrics.

William Thompson, MD. Chief Quality Officer of Saint Thomas Health (Nashville, Tenn.).
Dr. Thompson became chief quality officer of Saint Thomas Health in April 2012. He previously served as CMO of the health system's Baptist Hospital in Nashville for five years. As chief quality officer, he has responsibilities equivalent to those of a CMO in that he will lead clinical quality improvement and work closely with administration and medical staff on quality.

Jonathon D. Truwit, MD, MBA. CMO of University of Virginia Health System (Charlottesville). Dr. Truwit, a pulmonologist, has served as CMO of University of Virginia Health System since 2009. He became senior associate dean for clinical affairs in 2002.

Margaret M. Van Bree, MHA, DrPH. Senior Vice President of St. Luke's Episcopal Health System (Houston). Dr. Van Bree is senior vice president of St. Luke's Episcopal Health System and CEO of St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital. While the system does not have an official CMO position, Dr. Van Bree takes some of those responsibilities. She joined St. Luke's in 2009, before which she served as senior vice president and COO of the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison.

Bruce Van Cleave, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Aurora Health Care (Milwaukee).
Dr. Van Cleave serves as senior vice president and CMO of 15-hospital Aurora Health Care, which he joined in 2007. He previously served as president and CEO of Carondelet Health in Kansas City, Mo., and CMO of Trinity Health in Novi, Mich.

Bruce Vanderhoff, MD, MBA. CMO of OhioHealth (Columbus).
Dr. Vanderhoff was named CMO of OhioHealth in December 2008. He previously served as vice president of medical education, quality and patient safety at OhioHealth's Grant Medical Center in Columbus.

Brent Wallace, MD. CMO of Intermountain Healthcare (Salt Lake City). Dr. Wallace serves as CMO of Intermountain Healthcare. He previously served as chair of the IHC physician division board and has practiced family medicine in Roy, Utah, for 26 years.

Stephen L. Wallenhaupt, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Novant Health (Winston-Salem, N.C.). Dr. Wallenhaupt, a board-certified cardiovascular surgeon, is executive vice president and CMO of Novant Health. From 2001 to 2006, he served as executive vice president for medical affairs of Presbyterian Healthcare in Charlotte, N.C. Prior to that role, he was a physician partner at Hawthorne Cardiovascular Surgeons in Charlotte for eight years.

Stephen Weber, MD. Vice President for Clinical Effectiveness and CMO of University of Chicago Medical Center.
Dr. Weber became vice president for clinical effectiveness and CMO of University of Chicago Medical Center in May 2011. He previously served as associate professor of medicine and medical director of infection control and clinical quality at the academic medical center.

Thomas V. Whalen, MD, MMM. CMO of Lehigh Valley Health Network (Allentown, Pa.). Dr. Whalen was appointed CMO of Lehigh Valley Health Network in April 2011. He joined the health system more than five years ago as a pediatric surgeon, chair of surgery and the Anne and Carl Anderson Distinguished Chair of Surgery.

Robert Wiebe, MD, MPH, MBA. Executive Vice President and CMO of Dignity Health (San Francisco).
Dr. Wiebe became executive vice president and CMO of Dignity Health, then called Catholic Healthcare West, in May 2008. He previously served in leadership positions with the Veterans Health Administration for more than 22 years.

Robert Wyllie, MD. Chief Medical Operations Officer of Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Wyllie, board-certified in pediatrics and pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition, became Cleveland Clinic's chief medical operations officer in April 2011. He previously served as chief of Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital and chairman of the Pediatric Institute.
