Distribution of Hospitals and Surgery Centers by Population Levels
Here is the distribution of hospitals and surgery centers by population levels (with percent of total number of each facility type in parentheses), according to SDI’s 2008 Outpatient Surgery Center Market Report.
Hospitals
- Population of more than 1,000,000 — 2,472 (36 percent)
- 250,000 – 1,000,000 — 1,297 (19 percent)
- 100,000 – 249,999 — 621 (9 percent)
- Under 100,000 — 2,567 (36 percent)
Surgery centers
- Population of more than 1,000,000 — 3,169 (54 percent)
- 250,000 – 1,000,000 — 1,371 (23 percent)
- 100,000 – 249,999 — 593 (10 percent)
- Under 100,000 — 743 (13 percent)
This data, according to SDI, indicates that hospitals remain the primary deliverer of outpatient surgery services to regions of the country that may be considered rural or that have low population levels while surgery center operators remain attracted to regions with high population levels that ensure a steady stream of patients, referrals and growth opportunities.
