Here are the 20 largest for-profit hospitals in the United States listed by their number of beds.

1. Methodist Hospital (San Antonio). Methodist Hospital in San Antonio is a 1,414-bed hospital that includes flagship Methodist Hospital, Methodist Children's Hospital of South Texas, the Metropolitan Methodist Hospital, the Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital and Northeast Methodist Hospital. The hospital is operated by HCA. It was founded in 1963 and is part of Methodist Healthcare, which is led by CEO Michael Duffy. The hospital is a regional referral center with 2,500 employees and is used by more than 2,000 physicians associated with the Methodist Healthcare System. The facility is located in the South Texas Medical Center and is San Antonio's largest private hospital as well as the largest provider of healthcare to rural communities in South Texas.

2. CJW Medical Center – Chippenham Campus (Richmond, Va.). CJW Medical Center – Chippenham Campus is a 758-bed hospital in Richmond, Va., operated by HCA Virginia Health System. CJW offers cardiovascular care in its hospital-within-a-hospital, Levinson Heart Hospital, cancer care at its Thomas Johns Cancer Hospital, as well as a variety of other inpatient and outpatient services including orthopedics, obstetrics, neurosurgery, pediatrics, pulmonary care, wound healing and psychiatric services. The hospital is led by CEO Peter Marmerstein, who has held the position since 2004.

3. Henrico Doctors' Hospital (Richmond, Va.). Henrico Doctors' Hospital in Richmond, Va., includes three campuses — Forest, Parham and Retreat — which together give the hospital 692 beds. The hospital is also operated by HCA Virginia and is home to nearly 2,000 staff members and has been named as one of HealthGrades' 50 Best Hospitals. 4. Medical City Hospital (Dallas). Medical City Hospital in Dallas, often referred to as Medical City Dallas, is a 677-bed hospital operated by HCA. Medical City was established in 1974 by a group of North Texas' physicians and now features more than 1,150 physicians practicing more than 95 medical specialties. The hospital includes cancer, transplant, heart and women's services as well as a children's hospital within-a-hospital, which opened in 1996. Medical City named Erol Akdamar as its new CEO earlier this year. He previously served as CEO of St. David's South Austin (Texas) Hospital.

5. Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center (Las Vegas). Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center in Las Vegas is a 640-bed, HCA-operated hospital. The hospital features a heart and vascular care center, Nevada Neurosciences Institute, a certified stroke center, the Restore Wound Program, a cancer center and specialized Breast Cancer Center and four specialized ICUs. The hospital was founded in 1958 as a 52-bed facility and is currently led by CEO Sylvia Young.

6. Brookwood Medical Center (Birmingham, Ala.). Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham, Ala., is a 586-bed medical center operated by Tenet Healthcare. The hospital was founded in 1973 by a group of physicians and is home to the first women's hospital in Alabama. More than 900 private practice physicians refer patients to the hospital and more than 2,500 employees and volunteers support the hospital. Brookwood, led by CEO Garry Gause, offers services in a variety of specialties including orthopedics, cardiology and cardiovascular surgery and cancer care.

7. McAllen Medical Center (McAllen, Texas).
McAllen (Texas) Medical Center is a 572-bed hospital by operated by Universal Health Services and is part of South Texas Health System. The hospital opened in 1919 to serve patients in the Rio Grande Valley and today offers a broad range of community-focused services. McAllen's medical staff includes more than 400 physicians representing over 50 medical specialties. The hospital features a variety of services including orthopedics, pain management, pulmonology and is home to the Birthing Center of South Texas, McAllen Heart Hospital and a transplant center. The hospital is led by CEO Joe Riley.

Centennial Medical Center is a 555-bed hospital in Nashville. The hospital, operated by HCA, is used by more than 1,200 physicians covering a wide variety of specialties. The hospital's main tower, which opened in 1994, houses the region's most advanced tertiary care treatment capabilities and links all four facilities of the campus — The Sarah Cannon Cancer Center at Cenennial, The Women's Hospital at Centennial, Centennial Heart Center and Parthenon Pavilion for psychiatric care. Centennial is led by CEO Thomas Herron who oversees the hospital's more than 2,500 employees.

Since 1974, the hospital has been a leading medical center for Memphis and the Mid-South. It was the first full-service hospital in the East Memphis area, and the first in the area to establish chest pain and stroke emergency centers. Saint Francis's 42-acre campus is home to the hospital, two medical office buildings and the University of Tennessee/Saint Francis Family Practice Residency Building. All patient rooms are private, and the hospital's physicians cover a wide range of specialties including cancer care, cardiology, bariatrics, OB/GYN and orthopedics. 11. West Florida Hospital (Pensacola, Fla.). West Florida Hospital is a 520-bed hospital in Pensacola, Fla., operated by HCA. The hospital offers services in cardiology and cardiovascular surgery, oncology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, emergency care, behavioral health, obstetrics, rehabilitative medicine and other medical specialties. The hospital features all private rooms and its ER wait times are available on the hospital's website. The hospital also includes an America College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer-accredited cancer program, which was approved with commendation, and the area's only accredited chest pain center. 12. Providence Memorial Hospital (El Paso, Texas). Providence Memorial is a 508-bed hospital operated by Tenet Healthcare and part of the Sierra Providence Health Network. Since it opened in 1952, Providence Memorial Hospital in El Paso, Texas, has been providing generations of residents with a broad range of medical services including general medicine, surgery, pediatrics and obstetrics and numerous outpatient services. The hospital is a tertiary care institution with a large percentage of beds dedicated to intensive care. The hospital features comprehensive specialty services including orthopedics, OB/GYN, medical and radiation oncology and bone marrow transplantation and also includes the Heart Hospital at Hahnemann, a 198-bed dedicated unit that opened in 1993 as one of the first cardiac centers of its type in the region. Hahnemann is a Level I Regional Resource Trauma Center for adults and has earned Magnet Recognition by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The hospital is led by CEO Michael Halter.

The hospital has been meeting the healthcare needs of Palm Beach County residents for more than 25 years and was recently named as one of America's 50 Best Hospitals by HealthGrades. The hospital's services include diagnostics, neurosciences, emergency care, outpatient services and a heart center, the Fair Oaks Psychiatric Pavilion and Pinecrest Rehabilitation Hospital. It also includes an acclaimed Children's Hospital, which includes a NICU. More than 1,600 physicians have privileges at the hospital, and the hospital provided more than $33 million in charity care last year. The hospital was opened in 1962 by a group of local physicians. In 1979, to better reflect its full scope of services, Doctors Hospital of Modesto was renamed Doctors Medical Center. The hospital currently provides a variety of services to meet the healthcare needs of the Central Valley community including trauma, cardiology, high-risk obstetrics, neonatal intensive care and neurology. The hospital is also home to a Commission on Cancer-accredited community hospital cancer program. Doctors Medical Center is led by CEO Dennis Litos, who has been overseeing the hospital since 2006.

The hospital's emergency department treats 60,000 patients annually and is home to an accredited chest pain center. The hospital is also an active participant in several clinical trails. The hospital has been providing healthcare services since 1975, and currently has more than 500 physicians on staff and nearly 1,000 employees. The hospital provides a variety of services across medical and surgical specialties, including the treatment of diabetes, cancer and other diseases, as well as orthopedics, cardiology and maternity care. The hospital also offers skilled nursing, rehabilitation programs, outpatient services and outreach programs to promote a continuum of care for its patients and their families. 19. North Shore Medical Center –FMC (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). North Shore Medical Center-FMC is a 444-bed hospital operated by Tenet Healthcare. The hospital was formed when Florida Medical Center merged with North Shore Medical Center, part of Tenet South Florida, in June 2009. The hospital offers a variety of medical services including orthopedics, diabetes services, imaging and diagnostics and emergency services as well as numerous community programs. The hospital is also home to the Heart Institute of Florida, The Care Center of Women, The Surgical Weight Loss Institute and the Wound Healing Institute. 20. Carolinas Hospital System (Florence, S.C.).
Carolinas Hospital System in Florence, S.C., is a one-hospital health system that includes a 431-bed medical center. The hospital was operated by Triad Hospitals until 2007, when it was acquired by Community Health Systems and came under the CHS network of hospitals. The hospital moved from downtown Florence to its new campus in 1998 and currently employs 1,800 staff members and counts more than 300 physicians as its medical staff. The hospital offers a variety of services to its community including cancer care, urgent care, outpatient surgery, emergency services, diagnostics and imaging and women's health services. The hospital is led by CEO James O'Loughlin. The hospital is not to be confused with Charlotte, N.C.-based non-profit Carolinas HealthCare System.
