Senate Finance Committee Votes to Endorse Marilyn Tavenner as CMS Chief

The Senate Finance Committee has voted unanimously to endorse Marilyn Tavenner as administrator of CMS, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

The vote moves Ms. Tavenner one step closer to becoming CMS' first confirmed administrator in seven years, according to the report. She has led the agency as acting administrator since late 2011, following the departure of former CMS head Donald Berwick, MD.

Lawmakers on the Senate Finance Committee said CMS is in need of a permanent leader to implement the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, according to the report.

The complete Senate will now need to approve Ms. Tavenner's nomination. There is no immediate schedule for Senate action.
