Poll: Smallest gap between favorable and unfavorable views of PPACA since 2012

The gap between favorable and unfavorable views of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is the smallest it's been since fall 2012, and there has been a significant uptick in favorable views from the low in November 2013 during the law's troubled rollout, according to this month's Kaiser Health Tracking Poll.

The poll, conducted in early March by the Kaiser Family Foundation, shows 43 percent of the public view the law unfavorably and 41 percent view it favorably.

The poll also found the following:

1. There was a narrower gap than in recent polls between those who say the law has helped their families (19 percent) and those who say the law has hurt their families (22 percent).

2. More than half (53 percent) of respondents say they have heard nothing about  King v. Burwell, the case that will determine whether people in all states will receive health insurance subsidies under the PPACA, and another quarter (25 percent) say they have heard only a little about the case.

3. About one in five (22 percent) say they have heard at least something about the case, up from 14 percent in January

4. A majority of the public says that a Supreme Court ruling in favor of the plaintiffs in King v. Burwell that restrict subsidies would have a negative impact on the country (62 percent) and the uninsured (57 percent).

5. The majority of the public (53 percent) and the uninsured (57 percent) are aware that this is the first year they are required to report their health insurance status on their taxes. Thirty-two percent of the public incorrectly names a different year, while 16 percent says they don't know when it begins.

6. Similarly, a majority of the public (55 percent) is aware that people who got financial help from the government to pay for health insurance could owe money if their income or family size changed during the year, while smaller shares answer incorrectly (23 percent) or say they don't know (22 percent).
