Police arrest Las Vegas man for posing as physician, soliciting patients on Craisglist

A Las Vegas man police say posed as a physician has been arrested, and investigators are seeking the patients he treated, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

FBI agents and Las Vegas police raided the home of Rick Van Thiel Sept. 30 and shut down the practice he had been operating out of his house.

Mr. Van Thiel said he has been studying health and anatomy for 28 years and has treated hundreds of patients. His patients were solicited through Craigslist.

Websites promoting his operations include services such as curing HIV and getting women "un-pregnant." Payments were only accepted in the form of pure silver. Mr. Van Thiel often didn't give any treatment, but told patients how to cure their own ailments and diseases.

Authorities are searching for patients who were treated by Mr. Van Thiel. Joe Iser, MD, chief medical officer for the health district, said people who were seen may have been exposed to infectious agents or bloodborne pathogens.

Mr. Van Thiel faces counts of acting as a medical practitioner without a license, possession of a gun by a prohibited person, possession of drugs and issuing drugs without a license to prescribe them.
