Medical malpractice payouts over $1M are largely caused by wrong diagnosis

Many medical malpractice awards over $1 million could be prevented by targeted intervention by healthcare organizations to reduce diagnosis errors, according to a recent study by researchers from JohnsHopkinsMedicalCenter in Baltimore and published in the Journal for Healthcare Quality.

For the study, researchers at Johns Hopkins reviewed all malpractice claims that had been paid from 2004 to 2010 to identify key risk factors that lead to payouts of more than $1 million.

The researchers found nearly 8 percent of medical malpractice claims resulted in a payout of more than $1 million from 2004 to 2010. The study showed the greatest percentage of payouts exceeding $1 million were caused by errors in diagnosis.
