Maury Regional in Tennessee Settles False Claims Allegations With $3.6M

Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia, Tenn., has agreed to a settlement of roughly $3.6 million to resolve False Claims Act allegations, which it voluntarily reported.

An internal audit found discrepancies in Maury Regional's billing for ambulance transportation from 2004 through 2009. This included submitting claims and receiving payments for ambulances that were not medically necessary, for which a physician certification statement was not obtained or that were billed with incorrect mileage units, among other issues.

"Maury Regional is to be commended for the manner in which the hospital handled the disclosure of these billing issues once the issues came to light through the hospital's compliance program," U.S. Attorney Jerry E. Martin said in the release. "After notifying this office that the billing issues had been discovered, Maury Regional outlined its plan to determine the scope of these issues, followed through on that plan, and worked closely with us to bring this matter to resolution."
