HHS Reclaimed $7.90 for Every Anti-Fraud Dollar Spent

Staff -
HHS and the Department of Justice announced the federal government recovered $7.90 for every dollar spent on healthcare fraud investigations over the past three years.

A record $4.2 billion was recovered in fiscal year 2012, which ended Sept. 30. Over the past four years, $14.9 billion has been recovered, more than double the $6.7 billion reclaimed from the previous four-year period, according to the government's report, which was released by HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Attorney General Eric Holder.

The DOJ opened 1,131 new criminal healthcare fraud investigations with 826 convictions in FY 2012, as well as 885 new civil investigations.

A May 2012 takedown charged 107 physicians, nurses and other individuals in seven cities for a combined $452 million in alleged Medicare false billings. HHS also halted payments to 52 providers during pending investigations. Nearly 150,000 providers were deemed ineligible to bill Medicare between May 2011 and year-end 2012.
