Healthcare Fraud Cases Hit Record High in 2013

Federal prosecutors filed a record-setting number of healthcare fraud cases in fiscal year 2013, according to analysis from researchers at Syracuse (N.Y.) University.

Syracuse's Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse analyzed the latest available data from the Justice Department, finding the highest annual count of criminal prosecutions of healthcare fraud, as defined by 18 U.S. CODE § 1347.

Within the past fiscal year, the number of prosecutions went up 3 percent — from 366 in FY 2012 to 377 in FY 2013. That 2013 number is up 7.7 percent from five years ago, and 9.9 percent from the 343 prosecutions reported in 2003.

The lead investigative agency for the most prosecutions through September 2013 was the FBI, according to the analysis, taking 46.4 percent of the prosecutions referred. HHS was the lead agency for 36.6 percent of cases.
