Family sues Georgia psychiatric hospital over alleged sexual assault of child

The family of a 12-year-old boy who was allegedly sexually assaulted by another patient while he was staying at Atlanta-based Laurel Heights Hospital is now suing the hospital for negligence and seeking damages, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The suit, filed last week in DeKalb state court, alleges that the boy was sexually assaulted by a 14-year-old boy also staying at the hospital, and that the hospital's lax security measures allowed it to happen. The family also claims the entire incident was captured on camera, but that no one was watching the security monitors at the time.

"At this stage, there's no evidence we can see [of a failure] by the staff to properly monitor the patients," said Mike Hostetter, an attorney for the hospital's parent company King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services.
