Disciplinary Actions Against Michigan Healthcare Professionals Reaches New High

The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs Bureau of Health Professions has released a new report that shows there were 954 disciplinary actions taken against medical professionals in Michigan in fiscal year 2013, which is a new all-time high for the state, according to a Crain's Detroit Business report.

There was a 30 percent increase in the number of disciplinary actions taken against healthcare professionals in Michigan from 2012 to 2013. Additionally, the number of disciplinary actions rose from 577 to 954 — a 65 percent increase —  from 2004 to 2013, according to Crain's.

Although the recently released report does not provide the specific reasons for disciplinary action taken against the healthcare providers listed, the "trend appears related to a recent federal crackdown on fraudulent billing to Medicare," according to Crain's.

Detroit's Medicare fraud unit recovered more than $380 million in 2013, which is "more than double" any previous year, according to Crain's.
