Cheshire Medical Center to pay $200k for hazardous waste violation: 3 things to know

Cheshire Medical Center in Keene, N.H., will pay a $200,000 penalty after the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services found the hospital violated hazardous waste regulations, according to a New Hampshire Union Leader report.

Here are three things to know about the fine.

1. In May 2013, DES officials found Cheshire Medical Center had previously shipped certain pharmaceutical hazardous wastes to facilities that were not authorized to accept such wastes. The hospital self-corrected this violation as of January 2010, officials said, according to the report.

2. DES' inspection also found hazardous waste storage violations and that the hospital failed to follow certain training requirements for hospital employees.

3. Officials said the hospital quickly corrected all the remaining violations once identified by DES and was cooperative throughout the investigation, according to the New Hampshire Union Leader.
