Carthage Area Hospital Settles Overbilling Allegations

One day after the federal government filed suit, Carthage (N.Y.) Area Hospital has settled allegations of overbilling, according to a WWNY TV report.

Carthage Area Hospital acknowledged "errors" in its billing and over five years, the hospital will pay back the $750,000 the government alleged it lost. In its lawsuit filed Wednesday, the government claimed the hospital double-billed for about 1,900 procedures covered under Medicare and performed between 2006 and 2010.

In its lawsuit, the government claimed the hospital committed fraud, and because of that, it was entitled to three times the amount it lost. But in a statement released today, the U.S. Attorney's office in Syracuse said the "unique circumstances" of the case led it to seek only to recover what was lost, according to the report. The hospital also noted in its statement that the overbilling took place under a previous administration, according to the report.
