Cancer Treatment Centers Files Extortion Suit Against Former Executive

Cancer Treatment Centers of America, a national cancer hospital chain based in Schaumburg, Ill., has filed suit against former a executive, Lynette Bisconti, alleging she tried to extort nearly $50 million from the system's CEO Richard Stephenson, according to a Crain's Chicago Business report.

The suit alleges that Ms. Bisconti threatened to reveal CTCA trade secrets if Mr. Stephenson failed to pay her $10 million, and later, $50 million. Ms. Bisconti served as head of CTCA's non-profit Gateway for Cancer Research, which funds cancer trials.

The suit alleges that Ms. Bisconti asked Mr. Stephenson for a personal loan last summer; he provided her with $50,000. Three months later, she asked for more money and he refused, at which point she demanded $10 million or threatened to reveal confidential CTCA information.

Following this, in September, Ms. Bisconti was put on paid leave. She was fired in December after it was determined she accessed confidential documents while on leave, according to the lawsuit cited in the report.

In January, she reportedly asked for $49.5 million to keep her from revealing trade information. CTCA's Mr. Stephenson refused and has since filed suit.
