Broward Health in Florida Probed for Alleged False Claims

A federal investigation is underway at the public system Broward Health, based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for alleged false claims to Medicare and Medicaid, according to a Broward Bulldog report.

The probe stems from May 2011, when HHS agents issued a 15-page subpoena demanding records related to the health system's financial relationships with 27 physicians and North Broward Orthopedic Associates since January 2000.

Eighteen of the physicians named in the subpoena are members of Broward Health Physician Group, meaning they are district employees rather than independent physicians in private practice.

According to the report, HHS agents are conducting the civil inquiry with the Department of Justice and U.S. Attorney's Office in Miami.
