$89M Judgment Entered Against Florida Oncologist in False Claims Act Case

An $89 million judgment has been entered against Wasfi Makar, MD, for violations of the False Claims Act, according to an Orlando Sentinel report.

Dr. Makar formerly ran cancer treatment centers in Rockledge, Fla. and Titusville, Fla. A former employee of one of the facilities filed suit under the qui tam, or whistle-blower provision, of the False Claims Act, alleging Dr. Makar's office was submitting fraudulent claims to Medicare for procedures that were never performed or were done improperly, according to the report.

Dr. Makar's attorney indicated his client might choose to appeal because of the size of the judgment entered, according to the report.
