From the Justice Department joining another lawsuit against Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealth Group to the conviction of a Detroit physician following his participation in a $17.1 million Medicare fraud scheme, here are the latest healthcare industry lawsuits and settlements making headlines.

1. DOJ sues UnitedHealth over $1B+ in Medicare claims
The Justice Department sued Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealth Group May 16, alleging the payer defrauded Medicare at least $1 billion in false claims.

2. Couple sues Virginia Mason Medical Center for 2nd time after winning $8.5M verdict
A Washington couple filed a second lawsuit against Seattle-based Virginia Mason Medical Center, alleging the institution failed to provide information about multiple privacy breaches involving their medical and financial records.

3. Wyoming hospital claims former CEO concealed financial trouble from board
Rock Springs, Wyo.-based Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County countersued former CEO Jerry Klein for allegedly hiding financial information from the hospital board and overstepping his fiduciary duty.

4. Steward, physicians square off in $60M legal fight involving incentive payments
Boston-based Steward Health Care and one of its largest affiliated physician groups, Compass Medical Group of East Bridgewater (Mass.), are suing one another for fraud and breach of contract over millions of dollars in physician payments.  

5. 3rd Detroit physician convicted in $17.1M Medicare fraud scheme
Gerald Daneshvar, MD, a physician of Chicago-based home visiting service Lake MI Mobile Doctors, was convicted of participating in a $17.1 million Medicare fraud scheme with two other physicians.
