1. Adventist Health System to pay record-breaking $118.7M to settle improper physician compensation claims
Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based Adventist Health System agreed to pay $118.7 million to the federal government and to the states of Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee and Texas to settle allegations it violated the False Claims Act by maintaining improper compensation arrangements with referring physicians.

2. Prime Healthcare sues California Attorney General over failed hospital deal
Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare Services filed a federal civil rights action claiming California Attorney General Kamala Harris abused her constitutional powers by imposing unprecedented conditions on the sale of Daughters of Charity Health System, a six-hospital network based in Los Altos, Calif., to Prime.

3. Judge orders HHS to provide further justification for two-midnight rule's inpatient pay cut
A federal judge sided with the American Hospital Association and numerous other associations and organizations across the country in a lawsuit challenging a cut to hospital inpatient payments in conjunction with the controversial "two-midnight" rule.

4. Government claims hospital owner charged Medicare for BMWs
The federal government intervened in a False Claims Act lawsuit filed against Wiggins, Miss.-based Stone County Hospital and its owner.

5. Ex-hospital CEO pleads guilty to perjury charge in Chicago
The former owner and CEO of Edgewater Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago, Peter Rogan, pleaded guilty to a criminal perjury charge stemming from the hospital's financial collapse in 2002.
