Hawaii Health Systems to lay off dozens

Honolulu-based Hawaii Health Systems has announced plans to lay off about 35 employees, or roughly 1 percent of its workforce, according to a Hawaii News Now report.

In addition to layoffs, which will go into effect mid-December, the health system is also eliminating vacant positions, including a CMO role, according to the report. The system also did away with some consulting contracts.

The workforce reduction will trigger a bumping process, where senior employees whose jobs are eliminated can bump more junior employees out of their positions, a process that could take nine months, Hawaii News Now reported.

Hawaii Health Systems has been affected by lower state subsidies and insurance reimbursements, as well as rising costs, which led to the workforce reduction.

The health system runs 13 state hospital facilities throughout Hawaii.
