Executives' Top 5 Concerns About Strategy

More than 500 executives from a range of regions, industries and company sizes identified the top five concerns they have about their organizational strategies.

The April 2014 "Strategy-Execution Survey" from strategy&, formerly Booz & Co., collected responses online from 501 executives. The majority (55 percent) believe their companies are not focused on executing their strategies. Also, executives are most concerned their strategies are not bold and coherent enough.

Below are the responses executives found most worrisome, identifying these issues as those they are either "significantly" or "somewhat" concerned about.

• The strategy is not bold enough; the goals it sets aren't high enough for us to win — 46 percent.

• The strategy is not coherent; it does not ensure we leverage our most important capabilities, assets or resources across the entire organization — 38 percent.

• The strategy is not clear enough about how we create unique value for our customers — 33 percent.

• The strategy is not meaningfully differentiated from our competitors' strategies — 30 percent.

• The strategy is out of reach of what we can achieve; it requires us to stretch too far from our strengths — 24 percent.
