4 latest hospital, health system layoffs

The following layoffs or workforce reductions were reported by Becker's Hospital Review within the past two weeks, beginning with the most recent.

1. University Medical Center of El Paso (Texas) laid off 56 employees because El Paso Children's Hospital has been unable to pay UMC the $70 million it owes for contracted services.

2. Union Hospital, with locations in Terre Haute and Clinton, Ind., will eliminate 150 jobs from its workforce by the end of the year.

3. United Regional Health Care System in Wichita Falls, Texas, is instituting layoffs as part of a restructuring for respiratory care, central services and the laboratory. Those three specialties have 164 employees, of which 14 were affected.

4. Jennie Stuart Medical Center in Hopkinsville, Ky., plans to eliminate 70 jobs to cut costs. The workforce reduction will involve some early retirements and some layoffs
