10 things to know about Novant Health CEO Carl Armato

Carl S. Armato is the president and CEO of 14-hospital Novant Health, based in Winston-Salem, N.C.

A CEO with a background in finance, here are 10 things to know about Carl Armato:

1. Mr. Armato has been with Novant Health for more than 15 years. He began his tenure at Novant Health in 1998 when he was appointed the vice president of finance and operations for the physician divisions in both Charlotte, N.C., and Winston-Salem. He has also served as senior vice president of materials management and logistics and COO for Novant Health. Mr. Armato also currently serves as chairman of the board for Mecklenbug Citizens for Public Education in addition to his duties leading Novant.

2. Mr. Armato has a background in operations and finance. Prior to his tenure at Novant, Mr. Armato served as vice president of operations for First Care Physicians and director of finance for the General Health System in Baton Rouge, La. He also served as a senior tax/audit consultant for EY's Baton Rouge office.

3. Mr. Armato is a certified public accountant licensed in Louisiana and North Carolina. He is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the State Board of CPAs of Louisiana and the Healthcare Financial Management Association.

4. As CEO, Mr. Armato oversees a nonprofit healthcare system serving communities across four states: Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. The Novant Health system includes 15 medical centers and hundreds of outpatient facilities and physician clinics. The system has more than 1,200 physicians and 26,000 employees at nearly 500 locations.

5. A true innovator, Mr. Armato's leadership helped Novant gain Stage 7 recognition from HIMSS. Under Mr. Armato's leadership, Novant Health attained the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society's Stage 7 Ambulatory Award in 2013. Mr. Armato oversaw the systemwide conversion to the Epic EHR system.

6. Mr. Armato has worked hard to further unite the Novant System. With the hopes of unifying the Novant Health facilities, in 2013, Mr. Armato also oversaw a systemwide strategic branding campaign including new names and logos for its then-13 acute-care facilities, more than 100 outpatient facilities and more than 350 physician practice facilities across four states. Mr. Armato described the benefits of Novant Health's branding strategy as "[gaining] efficiencies in resources processes, decision-making, marketing and scaling."

7. Mr. Armato is well known for his emphasis on quality patient care. Under Mr. Armato's leadership, seven Novant Health hospitals achieved Magnet recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The Magnet Recognition Program is a national standard for excellence in nursing satisfaction, patient satisfaction and clinical performance. "We want patients to know that when they come to our hospitals, they'll be treated by a team of professional and compassionate nurses who go above and beyond in caring for their patients," said Mr. Armato.

8. For Mr. Armato, personalizing healthcare is a key issue. Last year, Mr. Armato oversaw the release of MyNovant.org, a tool for Novant Health patients to make appointments, email their care team, view their medical records and request prescription refills. Furthermore, MyNovant.org enables new patients to find Novant Health primary care physicians at their convenience. "This is just one of the many ways we are personalizing healthcare to fit their needs and busy schedules. We want to partner with our patients to make their healthcare experience just as connected, clear and hassle-free as all the other modern conveniences in our lives," said Mr. Armato.

9. Dedicated to improving the health of the community at large, Mr. Armato lead Novant Health to a collaborative accountable care initiative agreement with Cigna in April 2013. "Coupled with the high number of Novant Medical Group practices that are certified as patient-centered medical homes by the National Committee for Quality Assurance, the Cigna CAC is a complementary pairing to keep our focus on patient care and coordination," said Mr. Armato. The Novant Health medical group is comprised of more than 1,100 physicians and benefits more than 60,000 individuals covered by a Cigna Health plan in the Carolinas.

10. Mr. Armato's public relations practices are award-winning. In 2013, Mr. Armato was presented the Pegasus Award by the Public Relations Society of America, Charlotte Chapter, for excellence in communication and public relations practices and ultimately enhancing Novant Health's reputation.
