10 Things to Know About Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak

Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak (Mich.) is one of the largest nonprofit hospitals in America and serves as the academic research and referral center for the three-hospital Beaumont Health System.

Here are 10 key things to know about Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, which was recently named one of 100 Great Hospitals in America by Becker's Hospital Review.

1. Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak originally opened its doors in January 1955 as a 238-bed community hospital. Today, the hospital has grown to a 1,070-bed facility and one of the busiest hospitals in the nation. In 2013, it saw 56,000 admissions, 5,100 births, 49,000 surgeries, 120,000 emergency room visits and 1.3 million outpatient visits.

2. Gene Michalski oversees Beaumont, Royal Oak as president and CEO of Beaumont Health System. Mr. Michalski is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and serves as the delegate for the American Hospital Association Regional Policy Board Region 5. He has received the Michigan Health and Hospital Association Health Care Leadership Award and was named one of 300 Hospital and Health System Leaders to Know — 2013 by Becker's Hospital Review.

3. The hospital is also a major teaching facility, with 39 more than 441 residents and fellows in 39 accredited programs. For undergraduate training, Beaumont is affiliated with the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. It's also the exclusive clinical partner of the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine in Rochester, Mich.

4. The Beaumont, Royal Oak campus includes the Beaumont Research Institute, Beaumont Cancer Center, Beaumont Heart Center and the system's vascular services center, among other specialty services.

5. Beaumont seems to be responding to the changing healthcare industry landscape with a "centers of excellence" strategy, establishing itself as an expert care source for cancer, digestive health, cardiovascular health, neuroscience, orthopedics and women's health. It remains to be seen whether this strategic approach will serve as a "silver bullet" to the challenges of healthcare reform and an increasingly competitive market.

6. Last year, the hospital was recognized by Becker's Hospital Review as one of 100 Hospitals With Great Women's Health Programs. The hospital's women's health program offers a high-risk pregnancy program, reproductive genetics program and also includes a neonatal intensive care unit, a women's urology center and a women's heart center. Additionally, it offers uterine cancer treatment and hysterectomies.

7. In 2013, UHC, an alliance of the top academic medical centers in the country, presented Beaumont, Royal Oak with the UHC Quality Leadership Award for the third consecutive year. The award goes to top performers in mortality, effectiveness, safety, quality, equity, patient-centeredness and efficiency.

 8. U.S. News & World Report has ranked the hospital nationally in seven specialties: cardiology and heart surgery; diabetes and endocrinology; gastroenterology and GI surgery; geriatrics; orthopedics; pulmonology; and urology. Beaumont, Royal Oak has also received recognition from Truven Health Analytics, Healthgrades, Practice Greenhealth, the American Hospital Association, the National Research Corp., among others.

9. In 2013, an American Hospital Directory analysis of CMS data identified Beaumont, Royal Oak as one of the top-grossing hospitals in the country, with $3.31 billion in in patient revenue.

10. Last month, Beaumont Health System, Oakwood Healthcare in Dearborn, Mich., and Botsford Health Care in Farmington Hills, Mich., signed a letter of intent to combine their assets, liabilities and operations under one nonprofit system. The full-asset merger would make Beaumont, Royal Oak part of an eight-hospital system across the northern suburbs of Detroit. A timeline for a definitive merger agreement has not been outlined. Last year, due to cultural differences, Beaumont and Detroit-based Henry Ford Health System called off a potential merger that would have created a 10-hospital, $6.4 billion system.
