CMS: Partial Freeze on ICD-10, ICD-9 Updates to Continue Through 2016

Because of the ICD-10 delay, CMS has announced a partial freeze on updates to the ICD-9-CM and ICD-10 codes will continue until Oct. 1, 2016.

The last regular, annual updates to the code sets were made in October 2011. On Oct. 1, 2015, there will be only limited code updates to ICD-10 code sets to capture new technologies and diagnoses. Regular updates to ICD-10 will resume on Oct. 1, 2016, according to CMS.

Earlier this month, CMS announced the new date for the ICD-10 transition — which was originally scheduled to take place this October — will be Oct. 1, 2015. The announcement ended the uncertainty following the passage in early April of legislation that stated HHS could not compel providers to switch to ICD-10 before Oct. 1, 2015. That legislation did not provide an exact transition date.
