Workers at Texas clinic site stage protest alleging unfair labor practices

Ten electric workers at the construction site for the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Family Health Center in Corpus Christi are on strike, reports Corpus Christi Caller-Times.

The TL Electric workers are protesting over alleged unfair labor practices, David Carranco, union organizer for IBEW Local Union 278, told the publication.

"They want to be compensated fairly. They weren't provided water on the job," Mr. Carranco said. "They were told if they did not work mandatory overtime on Saturday, they'd be suspended a week with no pay."

Mr. Carranco, who does not work for TL Electric, said in the article that the protest started earlier this month after a meeting about the mandatory overtime.

Meanwhile, TL Electric owner Tommie Lee said remaining TL Electric workers have worked to meet their schedules without the protesting employees, according to the report.

"Nobody has contacted me from that group," he said. "The union has called. We are not in talks with the union because we are not in [an] agreement with the union. We're not a union shop."

Mr. Lee said in the report that the company urges workers to take water breaks as often as necessary, and various water coolers are provided on work sites.
