Teamsters union members to rally in Fairmont over Mayo's planned nursing home closure

Teamsters union members at Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont, Minn., plan to rally over Mayo's plans to close Lutz Wing, its 40-bed skilled nursing home in Fairmont, according to an Albert Lea Tribune report.

Teamsters Local 120, which represents the workers, will hold the rally Monday. At the event, participants are expected to advocate for ensuring healthcare services in Fairmont remain intact, Teamsters organizer Pail Slattery told the Albert Lea Tribune. He also told the publication he worries about the future of approximately 30 union nursing assistant positions that are expected to be affected by the nursing home closure. In addition to those positions, there are about 15 others not represented by Teamsters.

Affected staff members are able to apply for other roles at Mayo, system spokesperson Micah Dorfner said in an emailed statement to Becker's Hospital Review. He said Mayo has also worked with area skilled nursing colleagues to help identify employment opportunities at their facilities.

"We respect the right of the employees to peacefully express their position, even as we continue to be optimistic that we will reach a fair conclusion related to the effects of this transition," Mr. Dorfner added.

"Our top priority for Lutz Wing is ensuring smooth transitions for residents and supporting their needs. A formal announcement about which growing service line will expand into the Lutz Wing space will be shared in the coming months. Oncology and infusion therapy is considered a possible fit for the space."

Mayo announced the Lutz Wing plans in August, saying it expects to close the facility by Dec. 1.
