SEIU plans marches to demand UPMC implement $15 minimum wage sooner

The Service Employees International Union is targeting Pittsburgh-based UPMC and McDonald's restaurants with marches, demanding $15 minimum wage and union representation, according to Pittsburgh's Action News.

Organizers began their "Day of Disruption" at a McDonald's in Pittsburgh's East Liberty neighborhood Tuesday morning. The group plans to continue the protest near a McDonald's and the federal building downtown during the evening rush hour, according to the report.

Previously, UPMC disclosed plans to increase the minimum starting wage salary for entry-level jobs at most of its facilities to $15 an hour by 2021. However, SEIU says UPMC must get there faster, and it accused the health system of attempting to silence workers and union organizers, according to the report.

The union says UPMC shuttle bus workers have also gone on strike, demanding union representation.

UPMC did not immediately provide a comment to Pittsburgh's Action News.
