Hurley Medical Center nurses, pharmacists vote on possible strike

Workers continue to take steps that could result in a strike at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Mich., according to a WNEM report.

Unionized nurses and pharmacists at the hospital voted Wednesday on whether to give the union authority to call a walkout if they choose to do so, according to the report. The workers are represented by Registered Nurses and Registered Pharmacists Union. The workers' current labor deal expired more than a year ago, and they want to continue negotiations, the report states.

The hospital pointed WNEM to its website when the publication requested comment.

According to the report, one statement on the website reads, "Management has been in at least 39 negotiation sessions with 213 hours scheduled in those sessions. Management, not union leadership, requested a state-appointed mediator when it became clear in December 2016 that that no progress was being made. Despite eight negotiating sessions with a state-appointed mediator, no substantive progress was made."

There is still the potential for absentee ballots, so results of the election are pending, according to WNEM.
