Maryland OKs hospital worker apprenticeship program; Johns Hopkins 1st to participate

Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Hospital will be the first institution to offer on-the-job training to workers under Maryland's recently approved apprenticeship for environmental care supervisors, according to The Baltimore Sun.

The apprenticeship program helps job seekers gaining experience as environmental care supervisors — who staff surgical rooms and other hospital cleaning areas — without needing a college degree. Participants will receive technical education through the Community College of Baltimore County in Catonsville, Md., coupled with on-site training at Baltimore hospitals.

The program will match apprentices with hospital mentors and offer pay increases as apprentices meet job proficiency metrics, the report states.

The program is partially funded by a $2 million federal grant and is sponsored by the Baltimore Alliance for Careers in Healthcare, a nonprofit that addresses unemployment and healthcare work shortages in Baltimore.
