Humana among US firms seeking bilingual workers, study shows

Insurance giant Humana has a strong demand for employees who speak more than one language, according to a study released by the New American Economy.

The study examined the need for foreign language skills in the nation's workforce using data from labor market analytics firm Burning Glass Technologies.

Here are four study findings.

1. The number of job advertisements by U.S. employers targeting bilingual workers more than doubled from 240,000 advertisements in 2010 to approximately 630,000 by 2015, according to the study.

2. Foreign language skills most sought by U.S. employers include Chinese, Spanish and Arabic. The study found the number of jobs posted for Chinese speakers more than tripled between 2010 and 2015. The number of jobs listing Spanish and Arabic as a desired skill went up by approximately 150 percent during those years.

3. Nearly one in four online posts by Humana in 2015 were for bilingual workers, according to the study. That includes nearly 40 percent of the insurer's listings for registered nurses.

4. The study found a vast majority of occupations (60 percent) with the highest demand for bilingual workers in 2015 were open to people without a bachelor's degree. Among these occupations was medical assisting.
