UNC Health Care, Johnston Health Enter Exclusive Partnership Talks

Effective today, Johnston Health, a public health system based in Smithfield, N.C., and Chapel Hill, N.C.-based UNC Health Care have entered exclusive negotiations for a strategic partnership.

Johnston Health board members said the health system had whittled down its partnership options to three systems before ultimately voting unanimously for UNC Health Care. The exclusive talks will now lead to a period of due diligence, as both Johnston Health and UNC Health Care leaders iron out details of a final deal. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed, and both parties expect a final agreement will be signed this summer.

Last April, Johnston Health executives said its short list of potential partners included UNC Health Care, as well as WakeMed in Raleigh, N.C., Duke University Health System in Durham, N.C., Vidant Health in Greenville, N.C., and Quorum Health Resources in Brentwood, Tenn.

Johnston Health, which includes the 199-bed Johnston Medical Center-Smithfield, has also planned several expansions in the near term.
