SCL Health System Plans Sale of St. John's in California to Providence Health & Services

Denver-based Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System announced it has entered into negotiations to sell Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, Calif., to Renton, Wash.-based Providence Health & Services, beating out several high-profile Catholic systems and a local billionaire approved by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, according to a Los Angeles Times report.

"With the most extensive network of Catholic hospitals and physicians in the region, Providence is well positioned to succeed in this era of accountable care through population health management," said SCL President and CEO Michael Slubowski in a news release. He also said Providence's culture was deemed most compatible with staff and physicians.

The two Catholic systems are still negotiating the deal, which will be subject to review from regulators and church officials. No timeline for a definitive agreement or financial details were disclosed.

Other potential buyers who showed interest in buying Saint John's included San Francisco-based Dignity Health, St. Louis-based Ascension Health and Los Angeles-based billionaire surgeon, drug developer and professor Patrick Soon-Shiong, MD.
