Partners HealthCare Closer to Acquiring South Shore Hospital

Massachusetts' Public Health Council approved a determination of need and granted a license to allow it to transfer ownership of South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, Mass., to Boston-based Partners HealthCare System, according to a report by the Boston Globe.

Partners' plan to acquire the 378-bed hospital must pass antitrust reviews from the Department of Justice and be approved by other state agencies, according to the report. The plan has been criticized by union leaders, who claim the merger would cut jobs and compensation and drive up patient prices.
