Nason Hospital CEO: Despite Fiscal Health, Staying Independent "Not an Option"

Staff -
Although 45-bed Nason Hospital in Roaring Spring, Pa., is financially healthy, CEO Garrett Hoover says remaining independent is "not an option" due to the changing healthcare environment, according to an Altoona Mirror report.

Since August 2012, Nason Hospital and Altoona (Pa.) Regional Health System have been engaged in affiliation talks to create a new regional healthcare system. Altoona Regional is also pursuing a merger with University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, meaning Nason Hospital could eventually become an affiliate of UPMC as well.

Mr. Hoover told the Altoona Mirror that his small community hospital cannot handle the upcoming challenges of bundled payments, accountable care organizations and other payment innovations on its own and needs the resources and "economies of scale" that larger health systems can bring.
