Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center ordered to pay restitution for violating labor laws

Secaucus, N.J.-based Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center must pay an undisclosed amount in restitution for committing numerous unfair labor practices and for violating the medical center's contract with labor union Health Professionals and Allied Employees, according to NJ.com.

According to the lawsuit, HPAE officials accused medical center officials of denying fair wages to nurses, making unilateral changes to insurance coverage, failing to make 401k contributions, improperly laying off staff and blocking protected union organizing activities.

While exact details of the lawsuit have yet to be released, HPAE officials estimate that just two claims, failing to provide nurse intern wages and failing to provide 401K contributions, would amount to more than $2.5 million, according to the article.

It remains unclear whether the decision will impact the hospital's potential sale to an ambulatory surgery center in Hackensack, N.J currently under review by the state.
