Maui Memorial Medical Center in partnership talks with Kaiser Permanente Hawaii, Hawaii Pacific Health

Maui Memorial Medical Center, a state-funded hospital, is involved in preliminary discussions with Kaiser Permanente Hawaii, which operates one hospital and 20 clinics on three Hawaii islands, and nonprofit system Hawaii Pacific Health in Honolulu, about a possible partnership, according to a report by The Maui News.

Although Maui Memorial, which is part of Hawaii Health Systems Corp., is in talks with both organizations, the Hawaii legislature must pass legislation allowing public-private partnerships before either arrangement is permitted.

However, even without legislation being passed, Maui Memorial is determining the financial, quality and access to care aspects of the potential partnerships. Hawaii Health Systems' Maui Region CEO, Wesley Lo, believes a partnership with either Kaiser Permanente Hawaii or Hawaii Pacific Health would lead to improved healthcare quality at a lower cost than the state could provide, according to the report.
