Lawrence & Memorial Hospital's Purchase of Westerly Hospital Still Not Final

Although Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, Conn., completed the regulatory filings for its purchase of Westerly (R.I.) Hospital about six weeks ago, the purchase is still waiting regulatory approval, according a report by The Westerly Sun.

In early November, L&M submitted regulatory filings for the deal under a new process, which could allow for an expedited review from the Rhode Island Department of Health and the Rhode Island Attorney General's Office. Under an expedited review, the state agency could approve the transaction within 90 days.

According to the report, the Department of Health has not begun the expedited review because L&M's application is not complete. The state agency would like more information, specifically on previous findings on patient care and procedural violations by the Connecticut Department of Public Health, recent layoffs and a gap in L&M's budget, according to the report.

L&M received the request for more information in a letter Nov. 27. According to the report, the hospital is responding to all requests for more information and hopes to conclude the process by the end of January 2013.
