HealthPartners, Park Nicollet Health Services Sign Merger Agreement

HealthPartners in Bloomington, Minn., and Park Nicollet Health Services in St. Louis Park, Minn., have signed an agreement to unite their organizations and create a comprehensive, integrated healthcare delivery and financing organization.

HealthPartners and Park Nicollet are both non-profit integrated healthcare systems. The agreement will unite the organizations under a combined, consumer-governed board of directors, creating a 1,500-physician multispecialty group practice integrated with the HealthPartners health plan.

The combined operations will include the HealthPartners health plan, Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, four HealthPartners hospitals — Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minn.; Lakeview Hospital in Stillwater, Minn.; Hudson (Wis.) Hospital; and Westfields Hospital in New Richmond, Wis. — and a comprehensive system of medical and dental clinics across the Twin Cities and western Wisconsin.

The leaders of each organization will have leadership positions in the combined, non-profit organization. Mary Brainerd, HealthPartners president and CEO, will serve as CEO of the new organization, which will be named HealthPartners. David Abelson, MD, president and CEO of Park Nicollet, will lead the new organization's care delivery system, which will be named Park Nicollet HealthPartners Care Group.

According to the release, the deal will not change how patients and members interact with their clinics and health plans. However, over time, the combined organization will offer a broader set of coordinated care and coverage services across the region.
