Cleveland Clinic, ProMedica Sign Affiliation Deal

Cleveland Clinic and Toledo, Ohio-based ProMedica have signed a memorandum of understanding to form an affiliation.

Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed. The affiliation is not a full-scale merger, although both systems said in a news release that "groundwork will be laid for further integration in the future."

Under the initial affiliation, Cleveland Clinic and ProMedica hospitals will share clinical services, information technology, supply chain efficiencies and other best practices to manage population health. The deal also builds on the systems' business relationship from last year, when ProMedica joined Cleveland Clinic's national Innovation Alliance to commercialize medical intellectual property.

Cleveland Clinic is comprised of its main academic medical center, eight community hospitals throughout Ohio, a Florida campus and a new campus in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. It signed a strategic alliance with Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems in March.

ProMedica has 11 hospitals within its system, as well as a health plan and roughly 1,700 physicians.
