6 large-scale healthcare transactions awaiting regulatory approval

Six large-scale healthcare transactions reported by Becker's Hospital Review since Jan. 1 are awaiting regulatory approval by federal and state officials.

1. Massachusetts Eye and Ear declares plans to join Partners HealthCare
Boston-based Massachusetts Eye and Ear revealed plans to join Partners HealthCare, also in Boston, in January. On July 7, the deal was put on pause after the Massachusetts Health Policy Commission said it needed to further examine the transaction.

2. Wellmont, MSHA leaders say merger remains 'critical'
Despite waiting nearly three years to obtain regulatory approval, leaders of Johnson City, Tenn.-based Mountain States Health Alliance and Kingsport, Tenn.-based Wellmont Health still believe their proposed merger is necessary to improve the health and wellness of area residents

3. Partners HealthCare to acquire Care New England in Rhode Island
Providence, R.I.-based Care New England Health System signed a letter of intent to explore an exclusive affiliation with Boston-based Partners HealthCare in April.

4. Hackensack Meridian Health, JFK Health sign definitive agreement to merge
The boards of trustees of Edison, N.J.-based JFK Health and Hackensack Meridian Health, also in Edison, signed a definitive agreement to merge the two health systems in May following five months of due diligence.

5. Steward Health Care to acquire IASIS Healthcare
Boston-based Steward Health Care signed a definitive agreement to acquire Franklin, Tenn.-based IASIS Healthcare for a reported $1.9 billion in May. The merger is expected to close in the third quarter of 2017.

6. Palmetto Health, Greenville Health to create 13-hospital system
Columbia, S.C.-based Palmetto Health and Greenville (S.C.) Health System declared their intent to integrate June 15. The merged entity will consist of 13 hospitals and garner more than $3.9 billion in annual net revenue. It will also create one of the largest health systems in the state. Officials expect to obtain regulatory approval by Jan. 1.
