10 Things to Know About Woman's Hospital

Woman's Hospital in Baton Rouge, La., is the only freestanding, non-profit women's hospital in the United States, and it stands a model for women's health programs around the country.

Here are 10 things to know about Woman's, according to its website.

1. Teri Fontenot is president and CEO of Women's Hospital. Ms. Fontenot is considered to be one of the most influential women in healthcare and is currently the chair of the American Hospital Association's board of trustees.

2. Stephanie Anderson serves as CFO as well as senior vice president of finance and administration. Ms. Anderson first joined Woman's in December 1990, six years after she graduated with her bachelor's in accounting from Louisiana State University.

3. Woman's, a Level III regional referral hospital for obstetrics, newborn and women's cancer care, has 350 beds. Woman's opened its new, state-of-the-art hospital August 5.

4. The hospital has more than 1,900 total employees, and physicians are spread across several different specialties, including cancer, gynecology, breast care and more.

5. Last year, Woman's recorded $344.7 million in total revenue, according to the American Hospital Directory. Net income equaled $24.1 million for a 7 percent profit margin.

6. In 2011, Woman's recorded more than 11,400 adult admissions and nearly 8,000 births. There were almost 7,000 inpatient and outpatient surgeries, and the hospital conducted more than 47,000 breast procedures.

7. Woman's was the first Magnet hospital in Baton Rouge, and it recently received the 2012 Hospital of the Year Nightingale Award from the Louisiana Nurses Foundation and Louisiana State Nurses Association.

8. Woman's — founded by 21 physicians focused on women's healthcare needs — opened its doors in 1968, making it one of the first women's specialty hospitals in the country.

9. The research division of Woman's conducts several trials on clinical and molecular biology and genetic research in collaboration with researchers at several other institutions, including Louisiana State University.

10. Woman's Neurodevelopmental Clinic is one of the few comprehensive centers that provides multidisciplinary care for preterm and low birth weight babies who have developmental delays and neurological disorders.
