Wisconsin chiropractors want to prescribe painkillers

A bill in Wisconsin that would allow chiropractors to write prescriptions for painkillers has gotten a lot of attention from supporters and critics.

The Wisconsin Chiropractic Association is pushing for the ability to prescribe narcotics, though physicians and even some other chiropractor groups are opposed, Wisconsin Public Radio reported.

WCA contents that with additional training, chiropractors would be better able to help patients address back pain and help alleviate the patient load for primary care physicians. However, both the Wisconsin Medical Society and the Chiropractic Society of Wisconsin have been critical of the bill, saying chiropractors do not have this scope of practice anywhere in the country, nor is there a demand for it, especially as the country faces an opioid crisis, according to the report.
