Vidant opens 24-hour clinic to replace closed Pungo Hospital

Greenville, N.C.-based Vidant Health opened a new $5.5 million, 12,000-square-foot multispecialty clinic Monday in Belhaven, N.C., where it closed its Pungo Hospital in July 2014.

The 24/7 clinic offers primary care, cardiac consultations, prenatal care, X-rays and ultrasound. The opening of the clinic comes two years after Vidant closed the 49-bed Pungo Hospital — a decision that was met with significant debate and even launched a 273-mile march to Washington, D.C., led by the mayor of Belhaven.

Though the clinic does not provide emergency services, it is equipped with a helipad to transport patients that require a higher level of care.

"I've been practicing medicine in this incredible community for over 27 years, and having this new facility, with helicopter access, will allow us to better meet the vast majority of Belhaven area patients' needs," Greg Jones, MD, Vidant family physician and medical director of the new clinic, said in a press release.
