URMC, National Technical Institute for the Deaf partner to remove barriers for deaf scientists

The University of Rochester (N.Y.) Medical Center is teaming up with the National Technical Institute for the Deaf to create a series of programs to provide training and other resources for scientists and researchers who have hearing disabilities, according to WXXI News.

The partnership aims to make the medical center a "diversity hub of innovation" for the deaf community. The organizations have already begun work on training programs for deaf postdoctoral and master's degree students who plan to pursue a doctoral degree. Officials said they also hope to develop opportunities for deaf and hard-of-hearing scientists to network with prominent individuals in their fields. NTID President Gerard Buckley said social isolation presents a real problem for scientists that are hard of hearing. Often times, people talk about their experiences and research endeavors in places where people who are hard of hearing may have a difficult time understanding what is being said, according to the article.

"Your peers are sitting around all the time talking about what their experiences are, what they've learned, giving each other advice, and many times that information happens in social settings where access services aren't available," said Mr. Buckley. "It might be during a coffee break, or when you all go out to grab a beer or whatever."
