University Medical Center chief surgeon dies in bus crash

Kayvan Khiabani, MD, chief of hand surgery at the Las Vegas-based University Medical Center of Southern Nevada and assistant professor of surgery and head of the hand and microsurgery section of the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine died in a bus crash April 18. He was 51 years old, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Police said Dr. Khiabani was bicycling parallel to a bus around 10:30 a.m., near Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas Tuesday. Witnesses told police Dr. Khiabani appeared to accidently veer left, bumping into the side of the bus and into the path of the oncoming vehicle, according to the report.

Police told the Review-Journal the driver of the bus stayed at the scene and did not appear to be impaired, according to the report. Dr. Khiabani died at the University Medical Center April 18. The coroner reportedly ruled Dr. Khiabani's death an accident April 20.

Thomas Schwenk, MD, dean of the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, sent an email to employees Thursday announcing Dr. Khiabani's "untimely passing," according to the report.

"[Dr. Khiabani's] expertise in microsurgery and digit reattachment was unusual in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery and he brought broad surgical expertise and international clinical experience to his patients," Dr. Schwenk said in the email obtained by the Review-Journal.

Medical school officials said memorial services for Dr. Khiabani are pending, according to the report.
